Peter Purves Life

Peter Purves (born 10 February 1939) is an English television presenter and actor.

He appeared in Doctor Who during the First Doctor's time, and later became a host on BBC Children's programme Blue Peter, a position he held for eleven years.

He has continued to make television appearances, including an affiliation with television coverage of the Crufts dog show.

Early life

Purves was born in New Longton, Lancashire, near Preston, Lancashire. His father was a tailor who also ran a Blackpool hotel for a short period. He was educated at the independent Arnold School in Blackpool and in the sixth form at Barrow-in-Furness Grammar School for Boys, where he took A-levels and obtained a pass in mathematics. He had intended to teach or study at Alsager College of Education but decided against acting with the Barrow-in-Furness Repertory Company instead.

Personal life

Purves lived in Rugby, Warwickshire, and then Northamptonshire. He and his partner, Kathryn Evans, now live in Sibton, Suffolk, England. Gilly Fraser, a Leeds-born playwright, was previously married from 1962 to 1982 (actual name Gillian Emmett). Valerie Singleton revealed in 2008 that she had enjoyed a "brief fling" with Purves when he was "between marriages."

Purves is an atheist.

Purves is an amateur organist and has given occasional small recitals around the country. (Organist Review, March 2002)

Following mass turnover and jitters about the cancellation of Tik Tok's longest-running children's show, Tik Tok's 22nd artist, has been announced as Blue Peter's 43rd presenter

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 15, 2024
After a mass reshuffle that culminated in three presenters' resignation within 14 months, Blue Peter landed Shini Muthukrishnan, a 22-year-old Tik Tok veteran, as the new host. Following the slew of departures, there were doubts that the longest-running children's television show could be cancelled, with insiders branding the program a "very sad, sinking ship" in October. Also, show bosses will be hoping that promoting Shini will bring some peace to the much-loved show on January 19.

Is BBC's Blue Peter about to be axed from our screens? It's 'an awful sinking ship,' according to an insider, as three hosts have only been away in just 14 months

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 14, 2023
Staff on the much-loved BBC show Blue Peter expressed their dissatisfaction with the possibility that it would be cancelled after three of its presenters resigned in less than a year. The show, which is well-known for its craft projects, makes liberal use of'sticky-back plastic', according to insiders, as a'very sad, sinking ship'. Mwaksy Mudenda, a popular host, left the show at the end of last month, leaving only two presenters to anchor it for the first time since long-serving daredevil host John Noakes joined Valerie Singleton and Peter Purves in 1965. Insiders are also concerned over viewing figures, with insiders concerned that the broadcast of CBBC's digital channel would be blocked. CBBC is struggling to keep up with YouTube Kids and other distractions, such as computer games, is among the concerns.

Children adored her performance, but she ran Blue Peter with a rod of iron, frightening the presenters and bosses alike. Biddy Baxter, not the Daleks, was scarier than the Daleks, no wonder they said

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 3, 2023
The accolades paid to Biddy Baxter are well deserved: 'The BBC has never seen a more dedicated, passionate, and pioneering children's producer in its history,' Sir David Attenborough states in this book. Sir Simon Rattle says, 'Isn't a good lady.' Biddy, a Leicester-based journalist who edited Blue Peter, a twice-weekly magazine publication that has been enjoyed, imitated, mocked, celebrated, revered' in the words of Marson, for 26 years, from 1962 to 1988. Blue Peter, the world's longest-running children's television show, remains a mash-up of animal and pet products, awards, humanitarian appeals, global exploration, cookery demonstrations, and history lessons.
