Dennis Oguta Oliech (born 2 February 1985) is a Kenyan professional footballer who plays for Kenyan Premier League Champions Gor Mahia F.C. Starting in January 1, 2019.

He made his nation's all-time record goalscorer with 34 goals before retiring from international football in 2016.

Personal life

After he failed to appear in court to answer assault charges brought against him, a warrant of arrest was released against Oliech in late 2005.

Oliech was admitted to hospital in late-May 2006 following a row that culminated in a brawl and left him with facial scars. This was just after being in hospital after an exhibition match in Maringo during a local tournament.

Dennis Oliech Career

Club career

Oliech began playing football for Dagoretti Santos in his youth, then Mathare United. Oliech went on trial with Ligue 1 side Marseille during his youth, but Mathare United chairman Bob Munro prevented the change from happening.

Oliech was playing under a different middle-east name during Oliech's time with Al-Arabi in Qatar. At one point, he said he even forgot the name and had to be reminded that it was his name.

Oliech started playing for Al-Arabi in Qatar in 2003 and 2005 until late 2005. He was given the opportunity to change his citizenship from Kenyan to Qatari in 2004. However, he declined the bid. Oliech, a 19-year-old boy, was rated as one of the world's most promising young stars in a list that included future stars such as Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. Oliech played alongside Stefan Effenberg and Gabriel Batistuta during their time in Qatar while at Qatar. Al-Arabi turned down a Sh100 million bid from Monaco to sign Oliech in 2005. As the move to sign Oliech, Al-Arabi was ordered to pay US$15,000 to his youth club by the Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC). His goalscoring skills are well-known for goal poaching.

Oliech travelled with Stefan Effenberg and Gabriel Batistuta during their time in Qatar while in Qatar. "Batistuta told me, 'Oliech just run and collapse in the box, leave the penalty for me." Al-Arabi refused a Sh100 million bid from Monaco to sign Oliech in 2005. Al-Arabi's youth club received US$15,000 compensation from the Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), during the sign of Oliech. His goalscoring ability is well-known for goal poaching.

Oliech signed a four-year deal with Nantes, France's French Ligue 1 team, for the price of $3.7 million (KSh.281.2 million/=). Oliech was given a number nine shirt on the move in January. Nantes owed them Sh14 million, according to Mathare United's youth team, but the allegations were dismissed.

Oliech was off to a rocky start in France after undergoing knee surgery. Doctors gave him all-clear and resumed to work, and the boy was back to school 30 days later. He made his debut on March 11, 2006, when Julio Hernán Rossi came on for him in the 66th minute as Nante drew 1–1 with Lille. Oliech scored his first goal in the Coupe de France's round of 16 on April 1, 2006, sending them to the quarter-finals by 1–0 over Dijon. In a 3–1 loss against Marseille, his second goal was scored in the league match, leading to his second goal. Oliech made nine appearances and scoring twice in the 2005–06 season.

Oliech scored four times in thirty-two appearances in the 2006–07 season, but the season was tough for him, as he soon lost his first team position. Oliech said he is happy at the club despite the lack of first team opportunities and being affiliated with a Premier League team. However, FC Nantes was relegated in 2007 after finishing last in Ligue 1.

Oliech was signed on loan by Auxerre, who were in need of goals following a slow start to their season. Oliech made his debut in a 5–3 victory over Lorient after two months absence. Auxerre, who made ten appearances so far in the 2007-08 season, has signed him on a permanent basis from Nantes in January and kept him until 2011. Oliech also scored three goals in 24 games in 2007, including a brace against Rennes.

He had three goals in thirty-three appearances in all competitions) and 2009–10 seasons (scoring four goals in thirty-three appearances), but his appearances dropped dramatically as a result of numerous match determining mistakes and misjudgements. Oliech's confidence was boosted by Manager Jean Fernandez, who gave him more playing time in the 2010–11 season. In a 2–2 draw against Rennes on September 25, Oliech scored twice twice. Oliech was sent-off after receiving a second yellow card in a 2–1 loss against Ajax in the Champions League Group-Stage. Despite Auxerre's poor showing in the Champions League Group-Stage, finishing last with a single point, Oliech played five games. He signed a new two-year deal on January 5th, which will continue until at least the summer of 2013. Oliech scored four times in forty-three appearances at the end of the 2010-11 season.

Laurent Fournier was our club's new boss in 2011-2012. In a 4–1 victory over Sochaux on September 25, Oliech scored his first hat-trick for Auxerre. In a matter of 16 minutes, the hat-trick was achieved. Oliech scored two goals in two consecutive matches against PSG and Nice shortly after, shortly after in early December. Oliech was the club's top scorer despite losing his form later this season due to a series of match deciding mistakes and misjudgements, losing his goalscoring results, but it didn't get worse for the club as they were relegated to Ligue 2, but it didn't get worse for the club.

Oliech have since attracted attention from clubs around Europe and France and are expected to leave the club at the end of the 2011–12 season. Oliech was on the verge of joining Turkish side Kaspaşa for a long time, and his contract was unclear for three years. However, the transfer could not be agreed upon, and he returned to Auxerre. Oliech will score three goals in seventeen league appearances in the first half of the season in the 2012–2013 season.

Oliech said in the January transfer window that he wanted to leave Auxerre, snapping a six-year association with the club, so he could face a new challenge. Oliech was unveiled by Ajaccio of Ligue 1 on January 22, 2013, after completing a switch from Ligue 2 to a two-year deal and completing a transfer from Ligue 2 side Auxerre and signing a two- and a half-year contract. He was given the number 29 jersey and went on to score on his debut against Evian Thonon Gaillard in a 1–1 draw, which he was delighted to score on his debut.

Oliech ended his deal with AC Ajaccio on February 12, 2015, which was to run until June 2015 on mutual consent. Oliech's move to Al-Nasr, the club's UAE Gulf League team, was revealed earlier this week. However, it was announced on April 21, 2015, that Oliech had joined Dubai CSC in the UAE Division 1 league, not Al-Nasr.

Dennis Oliech, 33, decided on a two-year deal with Kenyan giants Gor Mahia on January 2, 2019, becoming the country's highest-paid footballer at a cost of Kshs.350,000.

International career

In 2002, Kenya lost 3–0 to Nigeria in their first international match.

At the 2002 CECAFA Cup, he scored five goals, leading Kenya to the success and receiving the top scorer award as well as the top scorer accolade.

In the final match of 2004 African Cup of Nations qualification, Oliech scored three goals, including the winning goal against Cape Verde Islands, as Kenya qualified for the final tournament. In a 3–0 victory over Burkina Faso in the 2004 African Cup of Nations itself, he also scored a goal.

After officials from the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) told him he owed them US$1,700, Oliech caused controversies in 2005 when he refused to join the national team squad. His mother defended him, insisting he had the right to request funds from the Kenya Football Federation. Oliech suffered his knee before a 2006 World Cup qualifier, but later reported he recovered from the minor injury days before. Oliech's apology for his entire situation was apologetic eight days later.

Oliech resigned from international football on March 24, 2016.

Most Kenyans agree Oliech's best game was against Cape Verd, when he scored a last-minute goal to qualify Harambee Stars for the AFCON Championship in 2004. When asked about his most important match for the national team, he said, "for us football strikers, all games are important because we must score." If we don't score, the match wasn't important."
