McDonald Mariga Life

McDonald Mariga Wanyama (born 4 April 1987) is a retired Kenyan footballer who served as a defensive midfielder for Kenya's national team. On March 16, 2010, Mariga made history by becoming the first Kenyan footballer to play in the UEFA Champions League for Internazionale.

Since the demise of Ken Okoth, he jumped into politics in 2019 to seek a Kibera parliamentary seat.

Personal life

Noah Wanyama, a left-winger of Mariga, played for A.F.C. The Kenya national football team and the Leopards are competing in the Kenya national football team. Victor Wanyama, his younger brother, is also a professional footballer, who is currently playing for Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer, while his two brothers Thomas and Sylvester are also footballers in the Kenyan Premier League. Mercy, the children's younger sister, was the captain of the Lang'ata High School basketball team and played football and netball.

Mariga ended his engagement with his long-serving Rwandese fiancée Ariane Umutoni in 2013, after the couple's ties reportedly deteriorated.

McDonald Mariga Career

Club career

Mariga began his playing career with Ulinzi Stars before heading first to Tusker FC and then Kenya Pipeline while still at school. Mariga was a member of the Kamukunji High School 'Golden Boys,' which also included Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech (Auxerre, France), who won two national Championships in 2002 and 2003.

In 2005, the central midfielder moved to Sweden to play for Enköpings SK's third Division. He signed for Helsingborg IF right after only one season at ESK. Helsingborgs' triumph was immediate. Mariga was expected to sign for the Premier League following initial interest from Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, but work permit delays delayed the contract, which was expected to cost around €2.7 million.

In August 2007, he joined Parma's Serie A club Parma on loan. In the summer, the Italian club had the opportunity to buy him for 20 million Swedish kronors (roughly €2 million). Mariga has signed a four-year contract to keep him at Serie A side Parma for four years until June 2012, after the club paid a transfer fee for Swedish Kronor 18 million (approx). 1.94 million euros). The contract, brokered by former Swede great Martin Dahlin, now an agent, fell short of Helsingborg's 20 million Kronor asking price. Enkopings SK, the club that first took Mariga from Sweden in 2005, will receive 25% of the transfer fee.

During the 2008–2009 season, Mariga appeared 35 times for Parma in the Serie B, scoring three times to help them return to Serie A for the 2009–2010 season.

He was supposed to sign for Manchester City of the Premier League in January 2010, but he failed to obtain a work permit. Kenya's Prime Minister Raila Odinga later announced that the 22-year-old Mariga had eventually obtained a UK work license, but only after the transfer window for the Premier League had closed. Had Mariga signed for Manchester City, he'd be the first player from the East African nation to sign for a club in the top English league, a record broken by his brother's on his move to Southampton in July 2013.

Mariga was transferred to Inter in a joint venture on February 1, 2010, the last day of the transfer window. Parma acquired half of Jonathan Biabiany's registration rights (€2.5 million) and Luis Antonio Jiménez' loan. Inter chairman Massimo Moratti praised Mariga's transfer as the "best thing that could have happened" to the club in January transfer window. In the 1st leg of the 2009-10 Coppa Italia Semi-finals against Fiorentina, he made his Internazionale debut. Inter barely won the match 1–0. When Mariga arrived on the field as a late replacement against Chelsea in March 2010, he became Kenya's first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League.

Mariga thought he had scored his first goal for Inter on April 24, 2010 against Atalanta, when he netted Samuel Eto'o's back pass into the roof of the net. However, his shot was diverted off Sulley Muntari, and the goal was instead credited to the Ghanaian. In a game that ended 3–2, he scored his thrashing header against Genoa for the Nerazzurri.

Inter bought him outright and bought back Biabiany each for €4.2 million, putting Parma's "loss from co-ownership" of €800,000 down, when the retained income of the unsold half had decreased from €5 million to €4.2 million. However, if counting the gains from Biabiany, Inter in reality paid Parma €10.9 million for Mariga plus the special loan of Biabiany. Although Luis Antonio Jiménez had been involved in the project, Inter failed after Inter lost its ownership on June 25.

Mariga was loaned out to Real Sociedad, a La Liga club, at the start of the 2011–12 season. Inter had a non-EU transfer quota that they used on winter signing Juan and Fredy Guarr (the other quota was obtained from Philippe Coutinho). He was loaned to Parma in January 2013 and scored his first goal against Lazio after half a season with Inter. In the upcoming game, he was hospitalized against Novara, effectively ending his season. He rejoined Inter and Biabiany at the end of the season at the behest of manager Andrea Stramaccioni's behest, but the club was released by the club in May 2014.

Mariga re-signed with Parma on September 4, 2014, the team he left for Inter in 2010.

He was signed by Serie B club Latina in January 2016.

Mariga signed a one-year contract with Real Oviedo, Spain's Segunda División club.

International career

On March 25, 2007, Mariga scored his first international goal for Kenya against Swaziland.
