Dennis Russell Davies Life

Dennis Russell Davies (born in Toledo, Ohio, April 16, 1944) is an American conductor and pianist. Davies studied piano and conducting at the Juilliard School, where he earned his doctorate.

He was the Music Director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra from 1972 to 1980.

He co-founded the American Composers Orchestra with composer Francis Thorne in 1977 and was its music director until 2002.

Davies was the music director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic from 1991 to 1996. Davies moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where he served as the General Music Director of the Baden-Württemberg State Opera House from 1980 to 1987.

Often in revivals with innovative and unusual staging, he premiered two Philip Glass operas as well as several standard operas.

He has collaborated with many directors, including Robert Altman, in a Hamburg-based collaboration.

He has worked with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Beethovenhalle Bonn Orchestra (1987-95), and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Davies was the chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Linz Opera from 2002 to 2017.

Davies was appointed third music director of the Sinfoniel Basel in March 2008, with a five-year contract as the first director.

He served in the post from 2016 to 2017.

Davies was announced as the Brno Philharmonic's next principal conductor, as well as the Aspen Music Festival, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, which he directed from 1974 to 1990, and the Saratoga Music Festival.

He conducted The Flying Dutchman at the Bayreuth Festival, the second American to perform there, and he taught orchestral conducting at the Salzburg Mozarteum. Davies' recordings include Copland's Appalachian Spring with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in 1979; Arvo Pärt's Fratres and Miserere; and many of Philip Glass' operas and symphonies, including the 5th symphony, which is dedicated to Davies.

At a 2012 New Year's concert in Linz, he premiered Glass' 10th symphony.

Davies premiered Glass's 11th symphony at Carnegie Hall in New York on Glass's 80th birthday, January 31, 2017.

Davies' 3rd Symphony by Lou Harrison is also dedicated to Davies. Davies has had a long association with jazz pianist Keith Jartt.

Jartt has appeared on classical concerto repertoire (including Mozart and Lou Harrison), and he has appeared in Jartt's orchestral performance as well as saxophonist Jan Garbarek's (featuring Jartt's music for piano and conducted Jartt's orchestral music).
