Career

Kappatoo and The Bill were two of a few television dramas as an adolescent. She appeared in a Drinking and Driving Wrecks Lives commercial in 1992. Melanie Blatt, also performed backing vocals for Dreadzone. She performed with former video game soundtrack singer Cathy Warwick in a 'girl group' called Those2Girls,' by which time she had become Denise van Outen. Those2Girls were signed to BMG's Final Vinyl record label and had a minor Top 40 hit in 1995 called "All I Want." In a 2007 survey of readers of Grazia magazine, Van Outen was named Rear of the Year in 1999 and ranked as the most coveted "bikini body."

Jill appeared in ITV1's interpretation of the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk with Julie Walters and Neil Morrissey during her first appearance on The Big Breakfast Show. She left The Big Breakfast at the end of 1998 in order to continue her acting career. Van Outen appeared in a performance of The Play What I Wrote once more in London's West End last year.

In 2003, she returned to the Gieln Theatre in Andrew Lloyd Webber's one-woman show Tell Me On a Sunday, which she reworked for. She was a huge hit, and the show lasted for almost a year. Van Outen appeared in the Ray Cooney farce Run for Your Wife film in 2012, alongside Danny Dyer, Sarah Harding, and Neil Morrissey. She co-wrote Some Girl I Used To Know With Terry Ronald in 2013, which she will tour in beginning in January 2014.

It was revealed in February 2015 that Van Outen would be joining the cast of EastEnders. Van Outen plays intelligent businesswoman Karin Smart, who joins Max Branning (Jake Wood), and has worked with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden). In August 2015, Van Outen appeared in the title role in a Cadogan Hall concert performance of the musical Sweet Charity, with actor/singer Michael Xavier, former Glasgow Aloud band member Kimberley Walsh, and West End actor Kerry Ellis.

Velma Kelly, a woman from September 2018, was confirmed as part of the cast of the 2018 London revival of Chicago in the West End. Van Outen had suffered a stress fractured in her heel during her first appearance on September 10, 2018, postponing her return to the stage with her new dates yet to be announced.

Van Outen has been the host of Matalan Presents: The Show since 2016. She was announced on August 30th, 2017 as one of the first judges on Ireland's Got Talent's first season. She appeared in the ITV singing competition 'Fox' in 2020, where she came fifth, where she placed fifth.

van Outen reunited with her longtime Big Breakfast buddy Johnny Vaughan as co-host of Capital Breakfast on Capital Radio on February 4, 2008. She resigned from the show on July 29, 2008, halfway through her tenure, owing to TV commitments and the early mornings. Van Outen said in April 2011 that she had left the show because her and Vaughan's friendships had soured. According to her, Vaughan hasn't spoken to her since. Van Outen began hosting her own Saturday afternoon radio show on London's Magic 105.4, airing from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Van Outen was revealed in September 2012 as one of the tenth celebrities to be competing on Strictly Come Dancing's tenth season. She worked with professional dancer James Jordan. Seven times, the couple has risen to the top of the leaderboard. Nevertheless, backlash erupted when viewers mocked her participation in the competition for the benefit of having had no previous stage experience. Van Outen and Jordan finished as the runners-up along Kimberley Walsh & Pasha Kovalev, behind winning couple Louis Smith and Flavia Cacace on December 20, 2012.

Van Outen was unveiled on September 23, 2020, as one of the thirteen celebrities on the thirteenth series of Dancing on Ice. She was partnered with Matt Evers. van Outen suffered partially dislocated shoulder and tendon damage to her left shoulder during rehearsals for the launch of series 13 of Dancing On Ice; van Outen was able to perform a modified dance routine with her professional skate partner Matt Evers on the launch show on January 16th. Van Outen pulled out of the sport on January 26, 2021, as a result of her dislocation, as well as three bone fractures which were discovered after further MRI scans.

So far, Van Outen has produced two collections for the website Very, a part of the Shop Direct Group. The first collection, which was launched in March 2010, was a maternity collection, and the second was a fall/winter collection.
