Dele Giwa Career

Early life and career

Sumonu Oladele "Baines" Giwa was born in 1947 to a family living in Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife. He attended the local authority Modern School in Lagere, Ile-lfe. When his father applied to Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife, as a laundry man, he gained admission to the school. Dele Giwa left the United States for his higher education, earning a BA in English from Brooklyn College in 1977 and enrolling in a Graduate Program at Fordham University. He worked with The New York Times as a news assistant for four years before relocating to Nigeria to work with Daily Times.

Dele Giwa, along with fellow journalists Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese, and Yakubu Mohammed founded Newswatch in 1984, and the first edition was published on January 28, 1985. According to a 1989 edition of the magazine, "changed the style of print journalism in Nigeria [and] introduced bold, investigative formats to news reporting in Nigeria." However, he did not rule in the first few months of General Ibrahim Babangida's government, who took power in August 1985. It featured his face on the front page four times, as well as criticizing "anybody who attempted to make life miserable for Babangida." The Babangida government was depicted with a more dismissive tone in the paper later.
