Personal life

François lives in Paris, France, after growing up in Liège, Belgium, where she attended the same high school as fellow actress Marie Gillain, who also features in Les Femmes de l'Ombre (as Suzy Desprez, while she assumes the role of Gaëlle Lemenech).

François said after the film L'Enfant: "My life changed completely. Before 'L'Enfant,' I thought, 'I'm this lucky girl who is going to make a movie, but that's going to be the only movie I'll ever make.' I had never even been to Paris before, and all of a sudden I'm around the world with festivals. It was very different from high school."

Deborah Francois Career

Career

François grew up in Liège, Belgium's French-speaking region, and she was discovered by two film directors (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne) in 2005, who gave her the principal female role in their film entitled L'Enfant – The Child. Bruno and Sonia are a young couple who appear in the film not far from François' hometown town in Seraing's run-down industrial town. Bruno's robberies are paid for by social security and the proceeds of his son's robberies, since he is the leader of a clan of robbers. Bruno sells their baby to a dealer for a few thousand euros when Sonia gives birth to a baby. At the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, this film was named Palme d'Or.

She left school and went into her next film in Denis Dercourt's Thriller La Tourneuse de pages, which earned her more fame in 2006. Mélanie, the cool and calculating butcher's daughter, has vowed revenge on the middle classes in the film. She believed that her promising career as a pianist had been ruined by the negligence of a well-known pianist and member of a jury years earlier, but she now takes revenge. She manages to integrate herself into the family as both a babysitter and page turner, thanks to a stroke of luck. François mimes the part of Mélanie, which earned her special appreciation from the critics and in which she was nominated for a César Award in 2007.

François received a César Award in 2009 for her role as Fleur in The First Day of Your Life. She was also named the Romy-Schneider Prize in the same year and appeared in the film My Queen Karo opposite Matthias Schoenaerts. She appeared in the 2010 film Mes chères études (later renamed Student Services), about a college student who uses prostitution to pay bills. She was nominated for the Magritte Award for Best Actress for Les Tribulations d'une caissière in 2013. In 2014, she was nominated for Populaire, and in 2015, she was nominated for Maestro.
