Darcy Wakaluk, a former professional ice hockey goaltender who competed in the National Hockey League from 1988 to 1997, born in Pincher Creek, Alberta, on March 14, 1966. Wakaluk grew up in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, where he became lifelong friends with fellow Ukrainian-Canadian and future Rochester Americans/Buffalo Sabres player Doug Houda.
He won the Alberta Provincial Midget 'B' Championship with the Pincher Creek Oilers in 1981-82. He competed for the Kelowna Wings and Spokane Chiefs in juniors.
Wakaluk was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres and spent five seasons with the Rochester Americans of the AHL, winning the Calder Cup Championship in his first year (1986–87) and making the Finals twice in 1989-90. In a game against Utica on December 6, 1987, Wakaluk became the first American Hockey League goaltender to score a goal when he shot the puck the length of the ice into an empty net.
Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers would complete the feat by shooting into an empty net two days later, becoming the first NHL goalie to score a goal.
Darcy would not be eligible to be inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in 2012. In the 8th round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, he was ranked 144th overall by the Buffalo Sabres and started playing for them in 1986-1989, where he appeared in six games.
He appeared in 16 games (and 2 playoff games) with Buffalo from 1990-91 and then the Dallas Stars, where he took over starting duties for Andy Moog in 1994 and then the St. Louis Blues, winning the last-ever game at St. Louis Arena.
He was signed by the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996, where he spent his remaining season after suffering a career-ending knee injury in a game against Washington in January 1997, which resulted in his departure. Darcy has been a Goaltending Coach for 4 teams in the WHL and another in the AJHL since his retirement.
He spent nine years with the Calgary Hitmen (where he won a WHL Championship in 2010 while coaching a young future NHL star netminder Martin Jones), former Vancouver Giants, Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves, Kamloops Blazers, and most recently with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
