Early life
D'banj, also known as the Kokomaster or Bangalee, was born in Zaria, Nigeria's northern area, on June 9, 1980, to a military officer who commanded an artillery regiment and a devout church dignitary businesswoman hailing from Shagamu, Ogun State. Taiwo and Kehinde Oyebanjo are twins of Dbanj.
D'banj was introduced to the harmonica by his late older brother, Femi Oyebanjo, who died in a plane crash at age 17. With D'banj's love for music overtaking his parents' military ambitions, he failed for his parents' permission; this can be seen best on his debut album, All Da Way.
Following his brother's death, D'banj arranged all his possessions on his bed after they were delivered home and then picked up his harmonica. "I'd play it to remember him." He discovered the skill with the instrument at university later. "I'd go to the female hostel after lectures," says the author, "and even if there was no electricity, I'd play there." After Titanic came out, he remembers hearing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" – "and that got me a lot of girls."
D'banj went on to study mechanical engineering at the Lagos State University, but he had to leave due to the constant strikes and numerous irregularities in the course. When he first arrived in London in 2001, he was denied plans to continue his studies as a mechanical engineer, and Don Jazzy, a singer and producer, was looking for a breakthrough as a songwriter and producer. D'Banj started hanging around the studio, making ends meet as a security guard. "It was fine because I stayed up late at night," he says, "I could listen to music on my headphones."
Don jazzy said he was a celebrity in the making and that the Nigerian music scene was "blossoming," the pair returned to Lagos in 2005. "Tongolo" was released the same year by D'Banj's mother; the film was paid for by D'Banj's mother. It became a national hit and has gained acclaim around the globe. Power Fist, an energy drink, was his first endorsement.

According to The Guardian, she was discovered with support from the NGO Stand to End Rape (STER). She said she had been kidnapped by Nigerian police, who handed her over to the D'banj's operations team, who co-opted her social media and made the retraction posts. D'banj denied the allegations, calling them "false allegations and lies from hell's pit."
