Early life and education
Kennedy was born July 22, 1982, in Fullerton, California. He attended El Dorado High School in Placentia, California and played 3 years for the school's varsity soccer team.
He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and was a student-athlete on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos men's soccer team. As a member of the 2004 UCSB team, he participated in the championship match of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship, but lost on penalty kicks. In his four-year career as a starter for UCSB, he appeared in 84 games.
Professional career
Kennedy was drafted by C.D. Chivas USA in the 4th Round (38th overall) of the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft from UCSB. He was not on the season, but he was a temporary backup due to injuries to their staff.
Hugo Maradona signed him to play with the Puerto Rico Islanders in the United StatesL First Division in April 2005. In the 2005 United Soccer Leagues season, he spent every minute with the Islanders, en route to being named the 2005 United States First Division Rookie of the Year. In his two seasons with the club, he made 55 appearances.
Kennedy was under contract with Puerto Rico and was expected to return to the 2007 United Soccer Leagues season, but he was transferred to the 2007 team, Municipal Iquique in Primera B de Chile. He immediately attracted attention for his playing, with Club Universidad de Chile, Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, and Cobreloa all rumored to have been involved in him. For the 2007 season, Kennedy led the Primera B in goals against average.
Chivas USA recalled their former draft pick Brad Guzan, who was understudy for the 2008 Major League Soccer season, in April 2008. Guzan was later transferred by Chivas to Aston Villa F.C., but not by Chivas. With head coach Preki bringing in veteran Zach Thornton as the number one in July, we saw an increase in the number one. Thornton was held out for weeks by a torn hamstring strain, propelling Kennedy into the starting position.
With the starting goalkeeper undecided between Thornton and Kennedy ahead of the 2009 Major League Soccer season, Kennedy's preseason knee injury knocked him out of contention. The knee suffered and Kennedy underwent reconstructive surgery to his posterior cruciate ligament in June 2009, putting his whole season out.
Thornton was Chivas USA's starter for the majority of the 2010 Major League Soccer season, but Thornton's 2011 Major League Soccer Season saw Kennedy named starter. He remained the starter for the remainder of the season, en route to being named the Chivas USA Most Valuable Player. Kennedy signed a multi-year contract with Chivas USA in December 2011.
After Chivas folded in 2014 Major League Soccer season, Kennedy remained the starter until Chivas were fired. Despite Chivas USA's last-place finish and appearance in the 2012 MLS All-Star Game, he came in second place for the 2012 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award. He signed a contract extension with Chivas and Major League Soccer in May 2013 through the 2016 season. "He's our captain and our symbol at this moment," Chivas technical director Francisco Palencia said of Kennedy at the time of the signing, "we're very excited to extend this contract." Kennedy scored his first professional goal against the Los Angeles Blues in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for the first time on May 28, 2013.
Kennedy completed his Chivas USA career as the franchise's all-time best-player (144), saves (451), and shutouts (28). Despite Chivas USA's demise, Kennedy's future in Major League Soccer was guaranteed thanks to the contract he had signed before.
In the 2014 MLS Dispersal Draft by FC Dallas, Kennedy was 1st overall after the dissolution of Chivas USA. Despite appearing in 16 appearances for Dallas, Jesse Gonzalez became oversaturated when Jesse Gonzalez was added as a starter.
Following the 2015 Major League Soccer Season, Kennedy was traded to LA Galaxy in exchange for two picks in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
Kennedy resigned from playing professional soccer on April 11, 2017.
