Acting career

Futterman appeared on stage for the first time in the WPA's Soda in 1991. In Tony Kushner's Tony award-winning play Angels in America, he succeeded Joe Mantello as the voluble Louis Ironson. In Jon Robin Baitz's A Fair Country (1996), Futterman portrayed an American diplomat's son who comes to harm in South Africa. In Dealer's Choice (1997), he portrayed a slick card player with a lot of aspirations.

In The Fisher King (1991), Futterman's first film role was as a thug who terrorizes Robin Williams. In the romantic comedy Breathing Room/'Til Christmas (1996), he appeared as a mentor. Far Harbor/Mr. Spreckman's Boat (also 1996) was an ensemble work starring Futterman as a smarmy doctor in an interracial relationship. He appeared in The Birdcage also in 1996, as Val, the son of gay lovers and nightclub owners Albert and Armand. In Shooting Fish (1997), he appeared in London as the American half of a pair of twenty-something con artists. In the NYC-based award-winning drama/thriller Urbania, he also played a befuddled young gay man in his hunt for his missing partner. In the 2002 film Enough, he appeared in "Joe" with Jennifer Lopez. A Mighty Heart (2007) with Angelina Jolie is Futterman's most recent film; he portrays murdered journalist Daniel Pearl.

In addition to that, Futterman has appeared on primetime television as a guest star. In Thicker Than Blood, a teacher who competes with a priest, he costarred with Mickey Rourke as a mentor who appears alongside Ron Eldard and Martin Donovan in the World War II drama When Trumpets Fade (HBO, 1998). In 1999, Futterman made the leap to television, co-starring as the brother of the main character in the CBS series Judging Amy. On The WB, Futterman appeared in a recurring role as the on-again, off-again boyfriend of one of the four sisters (Kiele Sanchez). On the sitcom Will & Grace, he appeared in a four-episode story arc. Futterman had been supposed to appear on the new ABC drama Brothers & Sisters, which had also written by Jon Robin Baitz, but had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts. Calista Flockhart, a former "Birdcage" costar, appeared in a film, but the pilot's version never appeared, but it never aired. He used to be a metrosexual man (pastry chef Stephan) on Sex and the City.

He appeared on the USA show Political Animals in 2012 for a recurring role.

Writing career

The screenplay for Capote was written by Futterman, and Futterman's buddy Bennett Miller produced the film. Both Futterman and Miller graduated from Mamaroneck High School and have been friends since the 7th grade. Truman Capote was recruited by two old acquaintance, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, to appear as Truman Capote, and the two began to make the independent film. The film's Executive Producers, Futterman and Hoffman, were Executive Producers. Several awards, including an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, were given to Futterman.

Futterman said in 2007 that he would concentrate on his writing career, and that he would turn Everything Changes into a Columbia Pictures film script.

Futterman and Epstein were in early 2009 to produce and executive produce "T" about a trans man going through gender transition, and It's based on a story from the radio show This American Life, and Ira Glass and Alissa Shipp of This American Life were supposed to be executive producers. The series, which was shown as part of SundanceTV's 2013-2014 line, was supposed to be written by Futterman and his partner, Anya Epstein.

Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo also starred in another Miller-directed film, Foxcatcher (2014), a biographical drama film starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo. At the 87th Academy Awards, he and Frye were nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Producing career

Futterman not only produces and stars in films and television, but he also co-produces these programs. He has regularly written scripts and executive produced alongside his wife, such as on the HBO series In Treatment. Also for Fox, Gracepoint, Futterman created a ten-part series. The Looming Tower for Hulu's executive producers, Lawrence Wright, and Alex Gibney, were executive producers of the Hulu in 2018. He is the showrunner of the 2021 Showtime series American Rust.
