Early life

Damali Ayo Patterson was born in Washington, D.C., where she attended Sidwell Friends School from kindergarten to high school. In 1995, she legally changed her name to avoid her last name.

In 1990, Ayo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double concentration in Public Policy and American Civilization. In 1997, Ayo immigrated to Portland, Oregon. She was invited to attend Portland State University and obtained a Master of Fine Arts in studio art in 2006.
