Dainius Zubrus Career

Playing career

Zubrus left Kharkiv, Ukraine's Soviet Union, for 11 years, with whom he grew close while serving for him until 1995. He participated in the 1992 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with them as a youth. Pravilov was arrested in 2012 for sexual assault of a teen girl and suicide by hanging in jail. "Since being aware of the horrific allegations against my former coach, all of my thoughts and fears have been for the children," Zubrus said. I have reached out to the children and told them that I am, and will continue to be, there for them."

In the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Caledon Canadians of the Metro Junior A Hockey League, Zubrus was ranked 15th overall, making him the highest drafted Tier II Junior "A" player since the league's inception in 1993 (a record that was later surpassed when Kyle Turris was selected third at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft). Zubrus competed for the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Junior A Hockey League before being moved to Caledon.

Zubrus scored a goal against the Florida Panthers on October 5, 1996 on his first appearance in the league. He helped the Flyers reach the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals in his rookie season. In exchange for Mark Recchi, the Flyers traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on March 10, 1999, as well as a pair of draft picks. On October 14, 2000, he recorded his first career hat-trick against the Chicago Blackhawks, and was traded to the Washington Capitals (along with Trevor Linden) in exchange for Richard Zedna and Jan Bulis on March 13, 2001.

Zubrus and Capitals teammate Alexander Semin decided to play in another country during the 2004-05 NHL lockout. He appeared in 42 Lada Togliatti games, scoring 8 goals and 11 assists for 19 points. During his time in the former Russian Superleague (RSL), he appeared in ten playoff games, scoring three goals and one assist.

Zubrus returned to the Capitals in 2005-06 season, scoring a career-high 57 points while assisting star rookie Alexander Ovechkin. Zubrus continued his good form in 60 games before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres (along with Timo Helbling) on February 27, 2007 in exchange for Ji Novotn and a first round-draft pick.

Zubrus, a free agent, inked a six-year, $20.4 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on July 3, 2007.

Zubrus hosted one of the finest offensive games in Devils history on November 23, 2008. Zubrus won New Jersey's season-high fourth straight game, beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 7–3. Zubrus reached his second Stanley Cup victory, losing the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals to the Los Angeles Kings, four years later. According to a three-year contract, the Devils released Zubrus on July 4, 2013.

Zubrus was released unconditional waivers for the purpose of completing the final year of his service on July 29, 2015.

Zubrus was invited to a professional tryout (PTO) with the St. Louis Blues on October 27, 2015. Zubrus was recalled from his first tryout after the Blues decided against committing Martin Havlát to a one-year deal on November 6, 2015.

The San Jose Sharks invited Zubrus to a professional tryout on November 16, 2015. He signed a deal with the Sharks eight days later, reuniting with former Devils head coach Peter DeBoer and former Devils teammate Paul Martin. With San Jose, Zubrus reached his third Stanley Cup Finals, which the Sharks lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was inactive during the off-season and missed out on the football team.
