Arron Asham Career

Playing career

Asham was drafted seventh overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut with Montreal during the 1998–99 season. He and the New York Islanders drafted Mariusz Czerkawski, a 2002 5th round draft pick for parts of four seasons with Montreal. Asham spent his first season with his new team in 2002–03, scoring 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 78 games, despite years of going back and forth between the Canadiens and their American Hockey League affiliate. Asham has been with the New Jersey Devils for four seasons, beginning with four seasons with the Islanders.

Asham became a free agent again in the 2007–08 season, this time signing a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers on July 7, 2008. "I've always loved the way the Flyers play, and I'm right here." Every night, they are up for a fight. They play violent hockey, and I've always loved it. I always thought I should play here, and when the opportunity came up last summer to come here, I thought it was the right spot for me and a spot where I'd really have a chance to win a Stanley Cup in the next few years.

As the Flyers defied expectations and reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1997, Asham scored four goals in the 2010 playoffs. He scored in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Montreal Blackhawks, giving the Flyers a 2–1 lead and a 2–1 victory over the Canadiens and propelling the Flyers to a Finals matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks. When the Flyers lost to the Blackhawks 4 games to 2, Asham scored one goal in the finals.

As a free agent this summer, Asham joined the Flyers and signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins worth $700,000. The deal was extended for another year in the following off-season.

Asham crossed-checked Brayden Schenn of the Philadelphia Flyers in the upper body, and then threw a punch while Schenn was down on the ice during Game 3 of the 2012 NHL Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Schenn suffered no apparent injury as a result of the assault. Asham's first discipline action since joining the NHL resulted in a four-game suspension.

As a free agent for the Penguins, Asham has signed a two-year deal with the New York Rangers on July 1, 2012. Asham had played for all 5 clubs in the former Atlantic division during his time. In a 5–1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 10, 2013, Asham scored his first goal as a Ranger. He is also the only player to score a goal with every Atlantic division team. He scored the series-winning goal in Game 7 of the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs on May 13, 2013, advancing the Rangers to the second round and destroying the Washington Capitals.

During the 2013–14 season, Asham saw little action with the Rangers, despite playing in only six games. He spent the majority of the season with the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Rangers did not want to extend Asham's deal, and on July 1, 2014, he became an unrestricted free agent, effectively ending his professional career.

Asham joined the Gander Flyers of the Central West Senior Hockey League in September 2015.
