DC Fontana Life

Dorothy Catherine Fontana (March 25, 1939 – December 2, 2019), an American television script writer and story editor best known for her work on the original Star Trek franchise and several Western television series. After a brief period of service for Samuel A. Peeples as a secretary, she went to work for Del Reisman, a producer on The Lieutenant, whose producer was Gene Roddenberry.

Despite the fact that The Lieutenant was soon cancelled, Roddenberry began filming on Star Trek, and Fontana was hired as the series's story editor, but she resigned after the second season to pursue freelance writing.

She returned to Roddenberry as a story editor and associate producer on Star Trek: The Animated Series later in life.

She worked on Logan's Run, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Buck Rogers in the 25th century during the 1970s and 1980s. Roddenberry recruited her to work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the connection soured their relationship, resulting in a lawsuit submitted to the Writers Guild of America.

She wrote an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and an episode of the Star Trek fan-made series Star Trek: New Voyages in 2002, and was twice nominated to the American Screenwriters Association's hall of fame.

Early life

Fontana was born in Sussex, New Jersey, and graduated from Passaic Valley Regional High School in 1957.

Fontana decided she wanted to become a novelist at the age of 11. She wrote horror stories about herself and her peers during her youth. She attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she earned her associate degree as an Executive Secretarial major. She moved from college to New York City, where she went from college as the junior secretary to president of the studio. She returned to her home state for a brief period of time before heading to Los Angeles shortly after her husband's death. During his time on the Western television series Overland Trail, she gained experience in the typing pool at Revue Studios, serving as the secretary to writer Samuel A. Peeples.

Peeples and Fontana continued to The Tall Man, and Fontana sold Peeples a story called "A Bounty for Billy" when the series was cancelled. She was 21 years old, and this was her first story purchase. She continued to work with Peeples on the western television series Frontier Circus. She sold six story plots, one of which was on Shotgun Slade for Nat Holt, during her Peeples stint. Since the series only allowed for four main speaking roles, including the central one, she was barred in this particular episode. Another episode in which she was writing had to be re-written to avoid any outside scenes as it was raining during the shooting, which could not be postponed because the weather would not change. These were all designed under Dorothy C. Fontana's name. Fontana moved along with the company's retirement, but the typing pool was returned to the Fontana.

Personal life
