Cyril Fletcher Life

Cyril Fletcher (25 June 1913 to 2 January 2005) was an English comedian, actor, and businessman.

'Pin back your lugholes,' his catch was caught.'

He was best known for his character "Odd Odes," which later became a segment of the television show That's Life!

He first performed the Odd Odes on television in 1937, long before they first appeared on television (though he did appear on pre-World War II television).

Odd Ode's first reading of Edgar Wallace's Dreaming of Thee was both comedic and sentimental.

Following this broadcast, he was given a regular radio Luxembourg show; it was this program that brought him to national notice.

He referred to himself as "the odd one." He also appeared on the popular UK BBC panel show What's My Line? From 1951 to 1963, there were many people in that period.

He appeared on Central TV's Gardening Today for 14 years and Channel Television's Cyril Fletcher's TV Garden from 1990 to 1992 for two years. Fletcher was born in Watford, the son of a solicitor who was the Friern Barnet town clerk.

He graduated from Friern Barnet Grammar School, north London, where he first began to entertain by writing witty poems about his schoolmasters.

As show industry, a Freemason and a profitable businessman, he felt it was important to diversify in such a volatile market.

He founded Associated Speakers, a company for after-dinner speakers, whose books included images of the Duke of Bedford and Lord Longford, as well as himself.

Personal life

Betty Astell and his husband were married from 18 May 1941 to his death on January 2nd, 2005, just over seven months later. Jill Fletcher, an actress and comedian, was the couple's daughter.
