Cory Cross Career

Playing career

Cross, who was first drafted first overall in the 1992 Supplemental Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, has spent 12 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Detroit Red Wings. He was a physically intimidating player with a strong shot.

Cross spent three seasons with the University of Alberta, winning three Canada West championships and one national championship in 1992. Cross made his IHL debut with the Atlanta Knights in 1993-1994. The Knights won the Turner Cup championship, but only lost 2 games in the playoffs. For the last five games of the 93-94 season, he was called up to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite making the Lightning return to the Knights during the NHL lockout, he rejoined the team during the 94-95 exhibition season. Cross had been called up to the Lightning for the remainder of the season after the lockout.

Fredrik Modin, who spent five seasons in Tampa Bay, Cross, as well as a seventh-round draft pick, was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the offseason. Cross scored one of his career's most important goals against the Ottawa Senators in Game 3 of the 2001 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on Sunday, leading to an exciting sweep of the top-two seeded Senators.

Cross was signed by the New York Rangers as an unrestricted free agent after three solid seasons with the Leafs. Cross appeared in only 26 games in New York before being traded again, this time alongside Radek D Kempe to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Anson Carter and Ales Pisa. Cross played 113 games for Edmonton before being traded with Jani Rita to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Dick Tarnstrom. Cross was traded from the Penguins to the Detroit Red Wings in 2006 for a fourth-round draft pick.

Cross made his initial signing with the Hamburg Freezers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in July 2006. Cross spent one season with Hamburg and then officially resigned as an active player in September 2009.

Coaching career

Cross will be an assistant head coach alongside former NHL player Brad Isbister on September 27, 2009.

Cross has been working as an assistant coach with the West Kelowna Warriors recently. They were named RBC Cup winners in 2016, which was held in Lloydminster, cross' hometown.
