Scott Thornton Career

Playing career

Thornton was drafted in the first round (third overall) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1989 NHL Entry Draft No. 2. In his rookie season, he appeared in thirty-three games for the team, winning one goal and three assists. He also appeared left wing for the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, and San Jose Sharks. On July 1, 2000, San Jose formally admitted him as a free agent. He had a good year in San Jose's first season, scoring 20 goals alongside gritty center Mike Ricci.

In the 2003-2004 season, he signed a two-year contract extension. Thornton became an unrestricted free agent after the Sharks declined to select the one-year option in his contract during his first season as a result of the 2004-05 NHL lockout. He committed to the Los Angeles Kings for two years on July 1, 2006. Thornton was on injured reserve due to a wrist injury and missed 23 games as a result.

Thornton announced his resignation on July 28, 2008.
