He has appeared in numerous other bands, including Desaparecidos, The Faint (previously named Norman Bailer), Commander Venus, Park Avenue, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Monsters of Folk, and the Better Oblivion Community Center.
By Rolling Stone magazine, Oberst was voted the Best Songwriter of 2008.
Early life and education
Conor Mullen Oberst was born in Omaha, Nebraska, as the youngest of three boys, and was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, by Matthew Ryan Oberst, Jr., an information manager for Mutual of Omaha, and Nancy Oberst, Omaha Public Schools' elementary education director. Matthew Ryan Oberst, Jr., and Justin H. Oberst were two of Oberst's older brothers. Matthew was a teacher and part-time musician until his death in 2016 and was involved in the development of one of Oberst's self-released independent albums. Matt was also in the indie band Sorry About Dresden, which Conor performed in from time to time. Conor has been writing and releasing music since a young age, with his first solo album releasing in 2013.
Oberst was educated at St. Pius X/St. Leo School in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was in the school choir and other musical ensembles, as well as Creighton Preparatory School, which is also in Omaha, Nebraska. He was enrolled at the University of Nebraska for a short time, but then had to leave after three semesters to tour.
Personal life
Oberst married Corina Figueroa Escamilla, whom he encountered in 2008 while recording music in Mexico. Oberst and Figueroa Escamilla were estranged amicably in 2017 when they parted amicably.
Oberst was accused of sexual harassment by a fan in December 2013, sparking widespread media coverage. However, by July 2014, the fan had dropped the accusation, saying that the allegations were "100 percent false" and that "my conduct weakened the allegations of actual sexual harassment victims, which was also apology." Oberst recalled the time in his life, "I'm not violent against anyone" and "for the second time, to have the whole world believe that [the allegations] were] true about me," he said. He went on to explain that he did not want to minimize how often women are sexually assaulted, quoting the fact that one in four women will be sexually assaulted at any time and adding that "I'm sorry and surreal and fucked up as my case was, I don't ever want to use this to argue anything."
Matthew, Oberst's brother, died in Cary, North Carolina, where he worked as a schoolteacher. He was 42 years old at the time. Oberst did not go into detail about his brother's death, other than to say, "[he] essentially drank himself to death," a sentence for which he has expressed regret: "I guess [Vice] caught me on a day where I didn't even give a damn about it." I remember feeling sad when my brother died without worrying about... my niece and nephew. They're certainly old enough to read an article." Oberst discussed Matthew's death in a separate 2020 interview: "It was really inconclusive." He had sleep apnea and evidently struggled with heroin use, but I was surprised to discover that it wasn't quite as straightforward as I had expected.
Career
Oberst was invited to perform one night onstage by Ted Stevens (of Mayday and Cursive). Oberst was invited back to play with him a few weeks later by Bill Hoover, who was in attendance. Oberst produced enough songs in that short time to fill the set, establishing himself as an artist. Oberst began committing his new repertoire to tape in his parents' basement with his father's four track cassette recorder and an acoustic guitar.
Oberst self-released his debut album Water on cassette tape in mid-1993. Justin's brother funded the album on Lumberjack Records, the indie label that would become Saddle Creek Records, allowing them to be both founders and present day executives of the label.
Oberst began playing with four people shortly after his two solo recordings; they became Commander Venus in mid-1995.
Here's a look at Special Treatment, following The Soundtrack to My Movie, 1996, a cassette that was exclusive to Sing Eunuchs. Bill Hoover's split 7-inch vinyl Kill the Monster Before It Eats Babies was also released around this time.
Oberst, along with Joel Petersen, and brothers Todd Fink and Clark Baechle, formed the Faint band in 1994, shortly after a Slowdown Virginia performance.
Oberst told the other members of the band that they had a show in two weeks at Kilgore's. Despite never having performed together, the two bands wrote nine songs to perform. Sine Sierra, an album, was released in 1995 (on cassette only).
In 1994, Oberst formed Commander Venus with Tim Kasher, Ben Armstrong, and Robb Nansel. Do You Feel at Home? (1995) and 'The Uneventful Vacation (1997). Kasher went on to form Cursive and Nansel, and Saddle Creek Records' co-founder Nansel was the co-founder. Cursive was Kasher's last album as they were about to launch their second album, and Todd Baechle replaced them. In 1998, Commander Venus was disbanded.
In 1996 in Omaha, the Magnetas were only active for a short time. Todd Fink (the Faint) and Chris Hughes were among Oberst's band members, as well as Oberst (Beep Beep). They released three songs, only one of which, "Annex Anex," was included on the Ghostmeat Records Parts compilation album. "Clatter" and "Science Fiction in Schools" are two other confirmed recordings.
Oberst began playing drums in a group called Park Ave. in January 1996, along with Clark Baechley, Jenn Bernard, Neely Jenkins (now in the band Tilly and the Wall), and Jamie Williams (also in Tilly and the Wall). The group only appeared between ten and fifteen shows and made a handful of recordings (several of them with Mike Mogis as producer). Williams, the singer and primary songwriter, and the group disbanded in 1998 when Williams, the band's main songwriter, moved to London, England. Urinine Records' first album, When Jamie Went to London... We Broke Up, which has since been released under Team Love.
Oberst created Bright Eyes as a solo venture in 1995, and after Commander Venus' disbandement, she released A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997. This was followed quickly by Letting Off the Happiness, which was released in November of the same year. It featured members of many bands as well as musicians from the Oberst family's basement. Bright Eyes' first EP, Every Day and Every Night, was released one year ago. Fevers and Mirrors, Bright Eyes' third album, was released in May 2000; it was ranked 170 on Pitchfork's list of the top 200 albums of the 2000s.
Bright Eyes gained national attention after the publication of 2002's Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, and Oberst was named a breakthrough artist by several prominent publications. Bright Eyes issued two new albums simultaneously on January 25, 2005: the folk I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, and more contemporary-pop Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, is one of the top ten albums of 2005.
In March 2007, the Four Winds EP was released, followed by their seventh album, Cassadaga, in April. Rolling Stone named "Four Winds" as a top-100 hit song of 2007. Oberst spent the next two years on other music projects, and told Rolling Stone in June 2009 that he wanted to record one last album with Bright Eyes before retiring the band. On Conor's 31st birthday, the band appeared on Conor's Key, dated February 15, 2011.
The band's return to touring and recording after a nine-year absence, as well as their tenth album Down in the Weeds, where the world once was on August 21, 2020.
Oberst, a guitarist and singer for Desaparecidos, is a guitarist and singer. Desaparecidos' music and lyrics are very different from Bright Eyes, having more in common with punk rock than Oberst's typical folk rock. The lyrics are generally political commentary on the state of affairs in America and the pitfalls of the suburban lifestyle, as opposed to the more reflective lyrics of Bright Eyes. Desaparecidos appeared as a band from 2001 to 2002, but they have regrouped to perform shows in the Omaha area. On Saddle Creek Records, they had two singles for "The Happiest Place on Earth" and the full-length Read Music / Speak Spanish.
The band reformed and self-released the 7-inch single "MariKKKopa/Backsell" in 2012, as well as continuing to tour. In 2013, they released "Anonymous / The Left is Correct" and "Te Amo Camila Vallejo / The Underground Man" (dedicated to Chilean student activist Camila Vallejo), as well as another tour. On June 23, the band revealed the release of Payola, a new studio album, on Epiphany Records.
According to a press release, Conor Oberst had been hospitalized due to "laryngitis, anxiety, and exhaustion." Oberst and Desaparecidos' remaining tour dates were postponed, and Oberst returned to Omaha to recuperate.
Oberst will perform on a solo album with Jake Bellows in November 2007, and he and M. Ward would form a band and appear in two late December shows in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Contrary to what was thought, the shows were not directed with M. Ward but rather with Nik Freitas and Jason Boesel. In February, they also appeared in Mexico City, Mexico.
Conor Oberst would appear at the 2008 Reading and Leeds Festivals on March 31, 2008. In late September 2008, he appeared at the Electric Picnic in County Laois, Ireland, and the Austin City Limits in late September 2008. Oberst also headlined the End of the Road Festival at the Larmer Tree Gardens in Wiltshire on Friday night, which took place over the weekend of September 12-14, 2008.
On August 5, 2008, Conor Oberst released the self-titled album Conor Oberst, which was recorded in Tepoztlán, Mexico, with Taylor Hollingsworth on guitar and Macey Taylor on bass.
Gentleman's Pact, the band's latest EP, was released about mid-October. It was limited to 1000 copies and was only available on tour. The band placed limits on how many people were sold at shows. There are four tracks that have not been released. Three of them are pre-album songs, while "Corina, Corina" is a cover of a traditional folk song.
On May 5, 2009, Oberst and the band's second album, Outer South, was released on Merge Records. Following Conor's solo album to their most recent collection One of My Kind, the band has also released a documentary titled One of My Kind.
Conor Oberst is one of the band's four members. Jim James of My Morning Jacket, M. Ward, and fellow Bright Eyes member Mike Mogis are among the band members. The band members trade instruments and divide vocal duties. On September 22, 2009, the quartet unveiled their self-titled debut album.
When Oberst was 13 years old, he released Water, his first solo album, on cassette tape. However, this album is also available and is no longer available. Conor Oberst, 2008, was his second solo album. Oberst embarked on a solo tour of North America and Europe between 2012 and 2013, showcasing with Ben Brodin on guitar and vibraphone throughout 2012. On the tour, he performed songs from Bright Eyes, Mystic Valley Band, and Monsters of Folk, as well as performing new songs.
On May 19, 2014, Oberst unveiled a new solo record dubbed Upside Down Mountain. He has been involved with producer Jonathan Wilson (Dawes, Father John Misty), and the Swedish duo First Aid Kit.

Oberst released Salutations, a companion album to Ruminations, on January 18, 2017.
