He was a football tight end at Illinois State and was signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and was on the Oakland and Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.

Early life and education
Underwood was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Scott and Donna Underwood. Both of his parents were top-notch athletes at Illinois State University: Scott and Donna played football for the Illinois State Redbirds in college, and Donna played volleyball. Underwood has spoken out about his decision to remain a virgin and how being on The Bachelorette aided him in discussing the topic. Cassie Randolph, a speech pathology student who first met her on season 23 of The Bachelor, began dating her. Underwood and Randolph broke up with the other two women during the third round and gave Randolph a second shot without the pressure of an engagement. Underwood and Randolph were in a relationship from November 2018 to May 2020.

Underwood returned to the Chargers on September 23, 2014, and he was assigned to their practice squad. He signed a future deal on December 29, 2014. He was waived on September 5, 2015, just over a year ago. He was put on injured reserve on September 6, 2015, according to his manager. He was suspended from active reserve on September 10, 2015.
