Somerset House to reopen after huge fire threatened priceless paintings by Van Gogh, Manet, Monet and Cezanne with 125 firefighters battling blaze - but its cause is still unknown

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 21, 2024
Around 125 firefighters swarmed the iconic building not long before midday on Saturday, battling the blaze as it tore through the roof of the art centre. It was announced in the hours that followed that the Courtauld Gallery, home priceless artwork, was 'unaffected' by the blaze. This meant pieces like Vincent Van Gogh's 1889 self-portrait showing him with a bandaged ear and and paintings by Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne were unscathed. And while the cause of the fire remains unknown, the Somerset House Trust revealed it would reopen the building this weekend.

The investigation into what started the devastating blaze at the capital's iconic Somerset House continues today as fire crews remain on site. Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters were deployed to the 250-year-old complex at 12pm yesterday. Smoke was seen pouring from the building as firefighters took to the roofs and raised themselves up to 32 metres in the air on cherry pickers and deployed drones to survey and tackle the flames. Today, the London Fire Bridge confirmed part of the third floor and the roof of the west wing of the building were damaged by fire.
