Career
In 1989, Roger Garcia, the lead guitarist for Selena y Los Dinos, married and left the music industry. A.B.'s bassist A.B. wowed the group's bassist. Other Tejano groups had good news about Quintanilla III. Shelly and others of the band gathered to watch Pérez rehearse with Shelly. Quintanilla invited Chris to one of Selena's shows and asked if he was interested in playing with Selena y Los Dinos. Pérez accepted, based on Los Dinos' music, which was more "hip and sophisticated" than other Tejano bands, and he wanted to know more about musical arrangement from A.B., who admired his work.
Pérez auditioned for A.B., the company's manager. Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., was initially dissatisfied with Pérez's rocker image and demanded that he change his appearance for the band. Pérez's acceptance in the club could damage his daughter Selena's "perfect image" and jeopardize her future, according to the elder Quintanilla. A.B. A.B. : A.B. Persuaded his father to accept Pérez, and Pérez was encouraged to explore new musical styles and mold their sounds to his own tastes. He and A.B. became close friends who occasionally collaborated on writing songs for Selena's next album. Pérez, like Selena, knew little Spanish, and lead keyboardist Ricky Vela coached him.
Pérez was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, under the influence and speed, in November 1990. When a police officer was involved in an altercation with his cousin, Pérez came to his cousin's assistance. After the brawl, police handcuffed Pérez and his cousin, but they released their friend, advising him to "run, don't walk" and "not even turn around." When Pérez was arrested, investigators confirmed they had started a high-speed chase and were following his car. The officers were lying, according to Pérez, but they did not press press charges because it would be "[his] word against theirs." He was cleared of criminal charges but told Selena and Abraham about his run-in with the police. They loved being notified, and it helped them to gain their confidence.
Several months after his detention, he was sharing a hotel room with two Selena road crew members when the two brothers, who were intoxicated, began wrestling. Pérez was also inebriated and joined in the tumultuous horseplay. One brother pulled the door off its hinges, and holes in the wall were discovered inside the room. Pérez chose to sleep at home rather than in the hotel. Abraham dismissed the brothers from the band the next morning, but to Pérez' surprise, Abraham accepted his apology and was allowed to remain in the band. Although Selena's relationship was initially broken as a result of the incident, she later forgave him.
Pérez and A.B. were both born in 1989 in Pérez and A.B. Selena's Coca-Cola commercial jingle. A.B. filmed the commercial after the company accepted the lyrics and Selena filmed the commercial. In Acapulco, Mexico, the band enjoyed a holiday. During the trip, Pérez realized he was attracted to Selena even though he had a girlfriend in San Antonio. Pérez thought it would be best for both of them if he tried to distance herself from her, but she found it impossible and decided to pursue a friendship with her. At a Pizza Hut restaurant, they expressed their feelings for each other and then became a couple soon after. They hid their relationship with her father out of fear that Abraham would threaten to break them up. Selena, who did not want to mask her feelings, was pushed to her limits.
Suzette ended up revealing the ties to Abraham, who took Pérez off the bus and told him that it was over. Despite Abraham's disapproving, the couple continued their closeness unethical. Selena took hope from the fact that her mother Marcella approved of their courtship until Abraham stopped the tour bus and led them to the back where Pérez and Selena were seated one day later. He yelled that their marriage was over, and Selena screamed at him. Pérez tried to calm them down but became involved in the spat after Abraham insulted him by calling him a "cancer in my family." Eventually, Abraham threatened to disband the group if they did not break up. Selena and Pérez, an intimidated group, were put off as a result. Abraham dropped him from the band and banned Selena from running away with him, causing Selena and Selena to be devastated and heartbroken.
Pérez was fired from the band but he jumped back in with his father and began playing music whenever he could. "I started enjoying my life again" after being deprived of the traumatic situation involving her father and the other Los Dinos family members. Selena, on the other hand, suffered as a result of their split, and the two tried to keep in touch when she was touring. Selena pounded on his hotel door on the morning of April 2, 1992. She coerced her into tears and began to weep, saying she could not go on without him. Selena wanted to marry that day, but Pérez said that it was not the right thing to do at the time. Selena said that her father would never accept their marriage and that she did not attend any of the weddings she planned. Pérez and the family eloped in Nueces County, Texas, Texas.
Selena was confident that if they were married, she would leave them alone, and they could be together openly. They intended to keep the elopement private until she figured out the right time to announce their union, but the media announced their engagement over the radio within hours of the wedding ceremony. Selena's family tried to locate her down. Abraham didn't take the news well and alienated himself for a time. Selena and Pérez lived in an apartment in Corpus Christi until Abraham approached them, apologized, accepted the marriage, and Pérez returned to the band.
Since being a fully accepted member of the Quintanilla family, Pérez was pressed to write songs for a rock band he was directing after he opened Q-Productions in late 1993. When the lead singer of Selena, Nando "Guerro" Dominguez, went to Selena's house to begin a recording, the resultant resultant in a posthumous recording. Pérez was leaving the recording session several hours later when Selena offered to film Dominguez's demo. "Puede Ser" was her version of the song that didn't get released until 2004, when it was added to her posthumous compilation album Momentos Intimos. A.B. : A.B. "Ya No" was Selena's last recording on Selena's studio album Amor Prohibido (1994), a writer who wrote "Ya No." He wanted to make it a rock song and requested Pérez' assistance.
Abraham discovered in spring 1995 that Yolanda Saldvar, who supervised Selena's boutiques and fan club, was embezzling funds. Saldvar denied that she had anything to do with fiscal discrepancies in checks that were found in her name in early March. Despite her father's warnings, Selena attempted to resurrect her friendship with Saldvar. Selena and Pérez arrived at a motel on March 30, 1995, to retrieve missing tax documents for tax purposes. Selena and Pérez arrived home and discovered that Saldivar did not have the correct paperwork. Saldvar, who tried to convince Selena to return to her motel room alone, was contacted by Saldvar. Pérez maintained that it was too late, and that he did not want Selena to travel alone at night. Selena then agreed to speak with Saldivar the next morning.
Selena awakened early on March 31, arriving Saldvar at the motel where she was staying. Saldvar, a Mexican woman who delayed the transfer of papers by a tale about being arrested in Mexico, met with her. Doctors in Saldvar were taken to a local hospital, where doctors found no signs of rape. Selena and his coworkers were returning to the motel room after a four-year working relationship ended. Saldvar reached into her purse and pointed it at Selena before pulling the trigger. The bullet struck Selena's right shoulder blade from the back, piercing a major artery running from her heart and exiting from just below her right collarbone. She ran to the hotel lobby and collapsed to the ground. Saldvar was her assassination as the motel workers arrived for the round. Selena was admitted to a nearby hospital, where doctors discovered the injury irreparable. Within an hour, she was declared dead.
After his wife's murder, Pérez couldn't eat for two days. He says he began using alcohol and other medications as a result of his inability to sleep and went into seclusion. He was losing weight quickly, according to family members. Chris felt guilty for failing to shield Selena from Saldvar.
In 1996, he and his father, Robert de Garza, walked outside of his Corpus Christi home and back in San Antonio. After getting to know each other, John Garza introduced him to Venessa Villanueva, they became a couple in 1998. Pérez and Villanueva married in 2001, raising two children, a boy Noah, and a girl Cassie.
Despite the fact that Villanueva did not want to divorce and instead wanted to try and work things out in their marriage, the couple finally decided that their marriage was irreconcilable. In 2008, they filed for divorce. Despite getting married again and having two children, Pérez hasn't been in touch with the Quintanillas following Selena's death.
John Garza, Pérez's companion, died 6 months after Selena's death. They began writing music, which Pérez found healing. Joe Ojeda and Jesse Esquivel on drums formed a rock band with Garza, Rudy Martinez (former member of La Mafia), bass, former Selena y Los Dinos keyboardist Joe Ojeda, and Jesse Esquivel on drums. Garza, Martinez, Ojeda, and Esquivel selected the Chris Pérez Band's name (the Chris Pérez Band). Chris liked the name Cinco Souls, but the other band members wanted to use his "reluctant celebrity." The band was signed to Hollywood Records and moved to A&M Studios (now Henson Studios) in Los Angeles to begin recording their debut album. Pérez's song "Best I Can" delves into his feelings about losing Selena and his struggles to go without her. The song was not intended for the album because of the fear that listeners would mistakenly believe he included the track for commercial reasons, but Hollywood Records and the band convinced him to include it on the album after hearing the demo.
On the album, "Another Day" (about Selena's devoted devotion to Selena) was included. Ojeda wrote "Solo Tu," a romantic ballad that Pérez turned into a rock song. On May 18, 1999, Resurrection was released on May 18, 1999, and the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album was given. With an intention to appeal to both audiences, the record company released two promotional singles (one English and one Spanish: the title track and the ballad "Por Que Tu Fuiste") to radio stations. The Los Angeles Times declared that the album was "upbeat and danceable, with lyrics that speak almost exclusively of loss, rage, violence, and abandonment." Mana's opening act was the Chris Pérez Band. Pérez started preparing for his second studio album in March 2000; the band's second and final album, Una Noche Más, was released on April 16 before breaking up. Pérez's brother-in-law A.B.B. joined Pérez as his brother-in-law. The Kumbia All Starz band formed in 2006 and left it in 2010 to form his own band. Los Dinos reunited at the Selena VIVE!' on April 7, 2005. A tribute concert was held in honor of the late Frank Forrest King.
Pérez formed "Todo es Diferente" in 2010, a Puerto Rican musician Angel Ferrer joined the Chris Pérez Project in 2010.
Pérez's book To Selena, With Love, delves into their personal life and struggles in March 2012. Fans begged him to write the book, and he was reluctant to write it. He did not seek the permission of the Quintanilla family to write To Selena, With Love, but did not announce the scheme out of fear of their reaction. After the book was finished, he approached Abraham. Abraham accepted it. Pérez wrote To Selena, With Love he helped him "step forward," he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Critics and followers alike praised the book. Selena, With Love denied the suspicion that Selena was pregnant when she died (which had appeared in media reports since her death).
Pérez revealed in November 2016 that a made-for-television miniseries would be created from his book. Abraham prompted him to file a lawsuit against him because it broke an estate property deal signed between him and the family two months after Selena's death in 1995. The litigation sparked a bitter rivalry between the family and Pérez, who took to Instagram and publicly accused the Quintanilla family of erasing his history with Selena in September 2020. Suzette released a rebuttal shortly after, and Perez apologized shortly thereafter. In September 2021, the lawsuit was settled.
ZEUS, Pérez's label, signed the first act in August 2021. El Mero Necio alias Carlton Zeus alias Carlton Zeus.
On the 25th anniversary of Selena's 1997 biopic Selena in December 2021, the film's 25th anniversary was inducted into the National Film Registry. Pérez paid tribute to the occasion by releasing a tweet and a snapshot of a white rose.
