Chris Leak Life

Christopher Patrick Leak (born May 3, 1985) is an American football coach and former gridiron football quarterback.

He played college football for the University of Florida and helped the Florida Gators defeat the Florida Gators in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game.

Leak served for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL), the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL), as well as the Jacksonville Sharks and Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League (AFL).

Early years

In 1985, Leak was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1998, Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell, who had just signed his older brother, C. J., received a college football scholarship, attracting national attention. He attended Freedom High School in Charlotte, where he competed for the Independence Patriots high school football team. Leak, the Patriots' starting quarterback, led his team to three consecutive North Carolina 4-A state championships in four years. He set North Carolina state records for passing yards in a career (15,593) and completions in a career (1,013) as well as the national record for touchdown passes in a career (185). Some believe him to be the best high school quarterback of all time. In 2003, he was named as both a Parade magazine All-American and Parade's Player of the Year. Leak was ranked as a five-star prospect and the third-best quarterback in the 2003 recruiting class, according to Scout.com's recruiting program.

Chris Leak Career

College career

Leak accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he played for coach Ron Zook and coach Urban Meyer's Florida Gators football teams from 2003 to 2006. Leak was known for his quiet leadership as a quarterback and was named a team captain by his colleagues two years as a Gator.

Leak started his college career at Florida, playing time in the first few games and taking over as the starter in the game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Leak set a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record for a freshman, winning over the eventual national champion LSU Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs during his freshman season. Leak was chosen to the SEC All-Freshman Team and Rivals.com's Freshman All-America Team.

Leak's quarterback skills improved during his sophomore season in 2004, making him one of college football's best quarterbacks. He started all of Florida's games, including a memorable school record-tying six-touchdown victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks. However, head coach Ron Zook was suspended following a humiliating loss to the unranked Mississippi State Bulldogs and an on-campus confrontation with fraternity students. Leak had been reported to be considering a transfer after Zook was fired.

Urban Meyer promoted Meyer's spread offense to the Gators in December 2004, replacing Ron Zook as Florida's head coach. Dan Mullen was appointed as the Leak's third offensive coordinator in three years. Leak's third offensive scheme in as many years was required to prepare his third offensive plan in as many years, but he was also considered a potential Heisman Trophy candidate going into his 2005 season. Leak won his first five games, including a big win over the Tennessee Volunteers in the SEC East, but he didn't do well in the Meyer's offense in the options portion. After Leak, a drop-back passer and not the right option to play Meyer's spread option offense, Meyer modified the offense to fit Leak's needs, the Gators were struggling midway through its schedule. The team's last two games against ranked competition went well, with the team winning their last two games against ranked competition. Leak received second-team All-SEC awards.

There was rumors that Leak would not be the Gators' starting quarterback before his 2006 senior season, but not so much so. Rather, Meyer publicly endorsed Leak as the starting quarterback and announced Tim Tebow as the back-up. According to Preseason Report, Florida would have the country's biggest schedule, with back-to-back games against Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Georgia. Leak's 2006 season was a redemption year for the Gators, leading the Gators to their first SEC Championship since 2000 and a spot in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game against the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Gators' first championship game appearance since 1996). During the 2006 SEC championship game, Leak also set new Gators' passing records, including Wuerffel's record for career passing yards. Leak earned second-team All-SEC recognition once more.

With a 41–14 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on January 8, 2007, Leak led the Florida Gators to their second consensus national championship, earning the offensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the game. His execution was solid throughout the BCS championship game, with his first nine passes at the start of the game and finishing with twenty-five completions in thirty-six attempts for 213 yards and one touchdown.

Leak was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll every year and was a finalist for the Dr. Jim Thompson Trophy, also known as the "Academic Heisman" for college football players. He graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in sociology with distinction in December 2006 and was a keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony.

Leak is best known for helping children in the Goodwill Gators Program by encouraging them to attend school first and avoid using opioids. He also worked with the Boys and Girls Club and the Steele Creek Youth Athletic Association in Charlotte, North Carolina, and he taught students at area middle schools to remain focused on their goals.

Professional career

Leak was not drafted in the 2007 NFL Draft. Right after the draft, the Chicago Bears signed him immediately. He spent the summer of 2007 with the team and training under former Gator quarterback Rex Grossman. However, Leak played only during his final game of the season, where he finished eleven of sixteen passes for 88 yards, an interceptor, and a touchdown. On September 16, 2007, he was finally cut from the Bears' roster.

Leak tried to play for the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2008 season.

In November 2007, Leak announced his intention to play for Team Florida in the All American Football League. He was later drafted by Team Florida in the sixth round. Without having start-up capital and low ticket sales, the AAFL's first season was postponed until 2009 (and then cancelled). Leak, as with all AAFL players, was released from his service.

Leak signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League on June 3, 2008. He was claimed by the Montreal Alouettes on June 9 after being released a day earlier. Leak was on the active roster for the Saskatchewan Roughriders' match on August 21, 2009, in which he threw his first CFL touchdown pass on his first play. In 2009, the Montreal Alouettes defeated the Grey Cup for the first time.

Anthony Calvillo, the Montreal starting quarterback, was forced to miss the game after being unable to complete it on August 19, 2010. The Alouettes will beat the Bombers 39–17. Leak will lead them. Leak made his first CFL appearance at quarterback against the BC Lions on September 3, 2010. However, he was on the short end of a 38-37 score, going 15-for-27 for 135 yards with two interceptions and a fumble. Leak suffered an apparent injury early in the fourth quarter and did not return. In 2010, the Montreal Alouettes defeated the Grey Cup for the first time.

Leak signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as a free agent on May 5, 2011. The Roughriders were booted out of the Roughriders on June 25, 2011.

Leak would make the ArenaBowl XXIV champion Jacksonville Sharks replace veteran quarterback Aaron Garcia, who joined the San Antonio Talons in the 2012 Arena Football League season, on September 26, 2011. In a 52-28 victory over the Kansas City Command, he played for the Sharks in his first game in which he competed for the Sharks. After it was announced that Garcia's former backup, Omar Jacobs, would begin the next game, Leak was suspended after skipping the following team workout. He was added to the left squad list on April 10, 2012, effectively ending his time with the Sharks. Leak signed with the Orlando Predators on April 23, 2012.

Post-playing career

During the 2012 college football season, Leak and co-host Chris Childers appeared on SiriusXM College Sports Coast-to-Coast multiple nights a week each week.

Will Muschamp, the head coach of Florida, has named Leak as a quality control coach in May 2013. Leak joined the team as a graduate assistant, helping with the team's offense. In May 2014, Leak was hired as the head coach of wide receivers.

In 2015, Leak began working with football growth and youth outreach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In February 2016, he was hired as the head coach of the Edgewater High School football team in Orlando, Florida. Leak resigned on October 4, after an initial 0.50 percent start. The next day, it was revealed that Leak was under scrutiny by the Orlando Police Department for possible sexual assault of a juvenile. The police later announced their probe and released their findings to Deadspin. The 16-year-old victim refused to press charges in October 2016, and the probe was closed.

He currently lives in Orlando, Florida
