Jacob Francis Tamme (TAM-ee), a retired American football tight end, has come to an end.

He played football at Kentucky and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Tamme has also played for the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.

Early years

Tamme debuted in Boyle County High School in Danville, Kentucky, where he was a multi-sport star in football, baseball, and basketball.

He was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at Boyle County, who claimed four consecutive state championships, two in Class AA and two in Class AAA, with two in Class AA and two in Class AAA, and had a 58-2 record in those seasons. When he finished 46 passes for 797 yards, a 17.3-yard average, and 13 touchdowns, he was a first-team all-state pick as a senior by the Associated Press and Louisville's The Courier-Journal. In addition,, he was a finalist for the Kentucky "Mr. Football" Award, which is given to the best performer in high school football.

His career includes 97 receptions for 1,866 yards, a 19.2-yard average, and 32 touchdowns. He intercepted 23 passes on defense, with two interceptions on touchdowns. He made 25 punts for 395 yards, an 18.8-yard average, and two touchdowns as a kick returner.

Personal life

College career

He appeared in all 11 games for the Kentucky Wildcats as a redshirt freshman. He played three games at wide receiver before transferring to his more suited position for the season-ending game at Tennessee. He had 16 catches for 161 yards on the season, his third on the team that year. He was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for his outstanding classroom performance.

He appeared in all 11 games, starting with ten as a redshirt sophomore. With 29 catches for 253 yards and one touchdown, he was second on the team in pass receptions with 29. He blocked punts against Louisville and Florida on special teams. For the second year in a row, he received a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

The SEC coaches and the Associated Press selected him as a redshirt junior to the All-SEC first-team. With 32 receptions and two touchdowns, he led SEC tight ends in receptions. For the third year in a row, he was inducted into the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

He had 619 yards and six touchdowns as a redshirt senior. He received first-team All-SEC recognition from both the Associated Press (unanimous decision) and coaches polls for the second year in a row.

Tamme's career ended with Kentucky's all-time top pass-catching tight end and second in the history of all SEC tight ends with 133 catches for 1,417 yards.

Tamme completed his degree in integrated strategic communications in only three years and obtained his MBA just before entering the NFL.

He was appointed to the National Good Works Team by the American Football Coaches Association, the SEC Community Service Team of the SEC Office, and the Frank G. Ham Society of Character by UK Athletics in 2006 for his contributions to the community.

He was one of 15 finalists for the prestigious Draddy Trophy in 2007, which is awarded to the country's top scholar. At the award ceremony in New York City, he delivered the acceptance address on behalf of the 15 finalists.

He was also named the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2007 and selected to the first-team Academic All-America squad by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

He was the 2007 recipient of the Bobby Bowden Award, a national award given by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Tamme was inducted into the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.

Professional career

In the fourth round (127th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Tamme. Tamme was the ninth tight end drafted in 2008. On July 23, 2008, he and the Colts decided to a four-year deal with undisclosed terms.

Tamme played in 12 games with 12 receiving yards as a rookie in 2008.

Tamme appeared in all 16 games (started 1) with 35 receiving yards in 2009). He aided the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV but lost 31-17 to the New Orleans Saints.

Dallas Clark was placed on Injured Reserve after an ankle injury to the wrist, and Tamme took over as the starting tight end of Week 7 of the 2010 season. Tamme shocked everybody by posting good statistical results and comparing him to Dallas Clark. Tamme had a career-high 67 receptions for 631 yards and 4 touchdowns on the season.

In 2011, Peyton Manning's absence decreased, his numbers dropped. He had 177 receiving yards and a touchdown on the year.

Tamme signed with the Denver Broncos for three years and $9 million on March 23, 2012. He had a $3.5 million contract and was guaranteed money.

Tamme's success in the 2012 season coincided with Peyton Manning's signing with the Broncos. Tamme finished the 2012 season with 555 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Tamme was part of a Broncos offensive that was franchise-setting, winning for the first time an NFL team scored over 600 points in 16 regular season games this year. Tamme completed 184 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2013 for the 2013 season. The Broncos were able to win Super Bowl XLVIII thanks to Manning and Manning. Tamme had 2 catches for 9 yards in the Super Bowl but lost 43-8 to the Seattle Seahawks.

Tamme appeared in 15 games and had 14 receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

On March 19, 2015, Tamme was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. He finished the season with 59 catches for a career-high 657 yards and one touchdown.

After undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery, Tamme played in 8 games and three for touchdowns, with three of them on injured reserve on November 21, 2016.

Tamme resigned from football on November 23, 2017.
