Early life and family

Rampling was born in 1946 in Sturmer, Essex, the niece of Isabel Anne (née Gurteen, 1918–2001), a painter, and Godfrey Rampling (1909–2009), an Olympic gold medalist runner and British Army officer. She lived in Gibraltar, France, and Spain for the majority of her childhood before returning to the United Kingdom in 1964.

She attended Académie Jeanne d'Arc in Versailles and St Hilda's School, a boarding school in Bushey, Hertfordshire, England. Sarah, her one sister who died in 1966 after being 23 years old, had only one sister, Sarah, who died by suicide in 1966. She and Sarah had a close family relationship, and they had appeared in a cabaret performance together in their youth.

Personal life

Rampling married New Zealand actor and publicist Bryan Southcombe in 1972 and had a son, Barnaby Southcombe (who became a television producer), before divorcing in 1976. Randall Laurence, a male model, had been spotted in a ménage à trois with a male model, and syndicated columnist Earl Wilson had a remark on life: "There are so many misunderstandings in life." I caused a controversy by claiming that I lived with two men [...] I didn't mean it in a sexual sense [...] We were just like any other people sharing an apartment." In a talk with The Guardian, Rampling acknowledged the friendship in 2021: During a 2021 visit to The Guardian, he said: Rampling acknowledged the link in 2021.

Rampling married French composer Jean-Michel Jarre in 1978 and had his second son, David Jarre, who became a guitarist and singer. Émilie Jarre, a stepdaughter who later became a fashion designer, was also raised. In 1997, the marriage was officially ended when Rampling learned from tabloid newspaper reports about Jarre's affair with other women. In 2002, the couple's divorce was final.

Rampling later remarked:

From 1998 to his death in 2015, Rampling was engaged to Jean-Nol Tassez, a French journalist and businessman.

Rampling has lived in Paris since the 1970s.

Her acting career flourished in both English and French cinema after this.

"We weren't happy," she wrote to The Independent during a brief flurry of success. It was a nightmare, breaking the rules and all that. Everyone seemed to be having fun, but they weren't aware of it anyway."

Rampling has appeared in a number of films. In 1969, she appeared in The Damned (La Caduta degli dei), Luchino Visconti's The Damned (La Caduta degli dei). Critics lauded her performance, and it put her in a whole new light: mysterious, emotional, and ultimately tragic. Dirk Bogarde's co-star Dirk Bogarde's "The Look" became her trademark, and she's since it was renamed "The Look."

She appeared in Vanishing Point, a scene cut from the U.S. theatrical release (included in the UK version). Barry Newman, the lead actor, remarked that the scene was of help in the film's allegorical lilt.

She appears in The Night Porter, a 1974 film in which she co-star Dirk Bogarde, as a former concentration camper reunites with a former camp guard (Bogarde), with whom she has a tense, sadomasochistic relationship. Rampling praises François Ozon for bringing her back to film in the 2000s, a time when she came to terms with the death of her elder sister Sarah, who died by suicide at the age of 23. "I thought it was because of such a long time of not having her be with me," she told The Guardian. I would like to bring her right back to my life." Sarah Morton, the actress of Ozon's Swimming Pool (2003), was named in her sister's honour.

For the majority of Rampling's life, she would only confirm that her sister died of a brain haemorrhage; when she and her father learned of Sarah's death, they decided they would never let her mother know the truth. They kept their information private until Rampling's mother died in 2001.

Rampling appeared in Tony Scott's Spy Game (2001), and Lemming (2005). She appeared in Heading South, a 2005 film about sexual tourism, at 59. Ellen, a French literature scholar who spent seven years in Haiti, got the sexual attention she didn't get at home.

Hideo Kojima created The Boss, the main protagonist of his game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, from Rampling's appearance, as the main antagonist of his game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, released in 2004.

"I generally don't make films to please people," Rampling said about her choices of roles. I choose the parts that challenge me to break through my own boundaries. It's certainly a large part of sex that requires eating, punishing, humiliating, or giving up. To find out what normal means, you'll have to face a tide of weirdness."
