Charles Voyde Harrelson (July 23, 1938 – March 15, 2007), an American organized crime figure who was found guilty of assassinating federal judge John H. Wood Jr., the first federal judge to have been killed in the twentieth century.

Personal life

Charles Harrelson was born in Lovelady, Texas, the son of Alma Lee (née Sparks, 1907–2002) and Voyde Harrelson (1901–1976).

He married Nancy Hillman Harrelson, Diane Lou Oswald, Jo Ann Harrelson, and Gina Adelle Foster. Harrelson's interests included stints as an encyclopedia researcher in California and as a skilled gambler. He was found guilty of an armed robbery in 1960. Harrelson confessed to being complicit in scores of murders dating back to the 1960s.

Woodrow Tracy Harrelson's son, Woodrow Harrelson (born July 23, 1961), became a television and film actor known as Woody Harrelson. According to Woody, his father disappeared from his family's house in Houston in 1968, leaving his wife Diane to raise Woody and his two brothers. Woody's father did not know him until 1981, when news broke of Harrelson's detention for the murder of Judge Wood. Woody admitted that he visited his father often in federal jail during an interview in November 1988, although he had mixed feelings about him.
