Anthony John Spilotro (May 19, 1938 – June 14, 1986), a.k.a. Anthony John Spilotro (May 19, 1938 – June 14, 1986), was an American mobster and enforcer for the Chicago Outfit in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the 1970s and 1980s.
When some of the casinos were operated by Frank Rosenthal, Spilotro's job was to protect and manage the Outfit's illicit casino earnings (the "skim"); swapping Outfit member Marshall Caifano in Las Vegas; and then arranges his assassination in 1986.
Spilotro was used as the inspiration for Martin Scorsese's mafia masterpiece, Casino (1995).
Early life
Spilotro was born in Chicago, Illinois, and the fourth of six children to Pasquale "Patsy" Spilotro Sr. and Antoinette Spilotro. He attended Burbank Elementary School and then enrolled in Steinmetz High School in 1953. His father had immigrated from Triggiano, Province of Bari, Italy, and had arrived at Ellis Island in 1914. Patsy's Restaurant, frequented by obsters such as Sam Giancana, Jackie "The Lackey" Cerone, Gus Alex, and Francesco "Frank the Enforcer" Nitti, was operated by him and his mother.
Tony and four of his brothers (John, Vincent, Victor, and Michael) became involved in criminal activity from an early age. "Patrick" Pasquale Jr., the youngest brother, became a dentist. Spilotro, a boyhood friend of Frank Cullotta, and he began a criminal career together as teenagers, engaging in robbery, robbery, and murder.
Since FBI Special Agent William Roemer referred to Spilotro as "that little pissant," he was branded "Tony the Ant" by the media. Since the media couldn't use "pissant," they shortened it to "Ant."
