His moves to English clubs West Ham United in 2006 and Manchester United in 2007 were plagued by issues relating to his third-party ownership by Media Sports Investment, and their resulting sagas paved the way for changes to both Premier League and FIFA regulations.
In 2009, Tevez joined Manchester United's rivals Manchester City. In the 2010–11 season he won the Premier League Golden Boot, and in the 2011–12 season he won the Premier League title. It was from there he received the nickname of "El Apache". His biological parents were Juan Alberto Cabral and Fabiana "Trina" Martínez. He was adopted by his mother's sister Adriana Noemí Martínez and her husband Segundo Raimundo Tévez. His adopted parents changed his surname to his adopted father's during a conflict between his junior club All Boys and Boca Juniors.
Tevez has a distinctive burn scar that runs down his neck from his right ear to his chest. He was accidentally scalded with boiling water as a child, which caused third-degree burns and kept him hospitalised in intensive care for nearly two months. After joining Boca Juniors, Tevez refused an offer from the club to have them cosmetically improved, saying the scars were a part of who he was in the past and who he is today.

Tevez once performed as the front-man for his cumbia villera musical group Piola Vago alongside his brother Diego. The group's most successful hit, "Lose Your Control", charted in Argentina.

Tevez was regarded by the media as a potential successor to Diego Maradona, whose number 10 shirt he inherited at the club during his time at Boca Juniors.
Tevez was transferred to Brazilian Série A club Corinthians in January 2005 for $16 million cash and youth players worth $2 million. A 15% and 10% transfer fee was paid to Kia Joorabchian and Tevez respectively. The transfer fee has also been estimated as $22 million. Following the Brazilian club's transfer to Media Sports Investment (MSI), Tevez signed a five-year, £6.85 million contract. The transaction was the biggest one in South American football ever. According to a Brazilian police probe, MSI owned 35% of the player rights (via BVI company MSI Group Limited), although another BVI firm, Just Sport Limited, another BVI firm, owned 55%. Tevez captained the team to the 2005 Campeonato Brasileiro and was named the league's best player by the Brazilian Football Confederation, becoming the first non-Brazilian player to win the award since 1976.
Tevez had declined to play for Corinthians after Sky Sports announced on August 23, 2006. Both he and Javier Mascherano were signed to West Ham United on permanent contracts for undisclosed fees, according to Tevez, who revealed it on his website on August 31. According to media reports, other Premier League clubs turned down the chance to sign Tevez and Mascherano because of clauses put in place by third parties MSI and Global Soccer Agencies, which owned both players' rights. Tevez was signed from MSI and Just Sports Inc., and West Ham had the player's registration rights, but the transfer fees were entirely paid to MSI and Just Sports (the economic rights).
Tevez made his West Ham debut after starting as a second-half replacement in the 1–1 home draw with Aston Villa on September 10, 2006. However, West Ham continued their nine-game winning streak (one draw and eight losses) that included seven consecutive matches without scoring. This winless run also meant that we were out of both the UEFA Cup and League Cup. Tevez left the field early after being recalled and throwing a tantrum during a league match against Sheffield United, and as punishment, his teammates decided Tevez would forfeit half of a week's pay to charity and train in a Brazil jersey. Tevez refused to wear the shirt, saying, "I played in Brazil and have a great admiration for Brazil and Brazilians, but I'm Argentine and will not wear that shirt."
In a 3–0 FA Cup third round victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on January 6, 2007, Tevez made his first appearance for West Ham under new chairman Alan Curbishley. In a 4–3 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur, he scored his first West Ham goal and aided two others on March 4, 2007. West Ham was fined a record £5.5 million in April 2007 for breaching Premier League rules over Tevez and Mascherano's signings. However, Tevez was able to play for West Ham in the Premier League after terms were agreed to be changed to a third-party agreement pertaining to him. Tevez was named the team's Hammer of the Year in the same month.
Tevez scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over West Ham's last league match of the season against Manchester United on May 13. Since Sheffield United's inability to beat Wigan Athletic at home on the same day, West Ham's remain in the top flight as a result of the match result.
Tevez refused to move to Inter Milan in June 2007, and his representative, Kia Joorabchian, said he was in talks to remain with West Ham because the player had joined the Premier League and wanted to remain in England. Tevez said he would not make a decision until the Copa América came to an end in July.
Tevez had agreed to join Manchester United on Friday, according to a tweet on July 5th. If a majority of the transfer fee was paid, West Ham said they would refuse to make a transfer until they were paid in full. Tevez was under contract until June 2010, according to West Ham's statement, in addition to not denying having held talks with any other club. Joorabchian denied the assertion by claiming that West Ham had allowed United to participate in talks.
Both Manchester United and West Ham requested FIFA's help in determining Tevez's ownership, but FIFA recommended the matter be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on July 24. Joorabchian intervened by suing West Ham with a High Court order "to press West Ham to compel them to reveal Carlos Tevez's registration in accordance with the parties' agreements." However, the case never made it to court after the Premier League agreed to a deal between West Ham and MSI in which MSI will pay £2 million to West Ham, which in turn released Tevez from his service.
Tevez's two-year loan agreement was agreed on by Manchester United on August 10, 2007. In a 2–0 home victory over Chelsea on September 23, he scored his first goal. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said in November that the club wanted to keep Tevez on the team's books "this season, and, in the case, they'll be vital goals." Tevez said on May 10th, 2009, he believed his time at Manchester United would come to an end this summer, and he expressed his dissatisfaction with not having been offered a long contract and being dropped from the squad, despite not having played poorly. Despite the outburst, Tevez was named in Manchester United's starting 11 for the derby match against Manchester City later that day, before scoring the second of United's two goals on the stroke of halftime, triggering chants of "Fergie, sign him up" from some of the club's supporters. Ferguson refused to be drawn on the topic of Tevez's future with the club after the match, saying, "I didn't read any of the papers." "He's a Manchester United player."
Manchester United's next match was played at Wigan, and the following match was played. Tevez did not start the game, but the equalizer was scored on 58 minutes later with a flamboyant back-heeled finish three minutes later. His arrival immediately improved the team's play, and Michael Carrick earned the award in 86 minutes. Ferguson revealed after the game, to the relief of most United Fans, that the club had started talks to bring Tevez to a permanent deal. Tevez started the match against Arsenal, but Park Ji-sung replaced him in the 66th minute. In what would be his last game for United, the Manchester United supporters applauded him as he left the field. Tevez's future, according to United chief executive David Gill, will be decided by early June 2009. Although United agreed to pay Tevez a five-year deal, making him one of the club's top earners, Tevez's advisors informed the club that he no longer wanted to play for Manchester United. However, reports also stated that Tevez had denied signing for Liverpool given the ramifications of a Manchester United player's move to join their north-west rivals.
After protracted talks, Tevez signed a five-year deal with Manchester United's cross-town rivals, Manchester City, after a medical on July 14, 2009. Tevez, his manager, who had recently pleaded with the club to renegotiate and raise his contract, gave the club a written transfer request in December 2010, citing family reasons and a lack of "relationship with certain executives and personnel at the club." Tevez's transfer request was turned down by the club, with a senior club official describing his reasons for wanting to leave as "ludicrous and nonsensical," although the club also said that if the player was fired before January, the player would demand compensation for a lack of contract from his agent if he retired or refused to participate.
