Carl Frampton Career

Amateur career

Both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is run by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, which is also responsible for amateur boxing. Frampton competed out of the Midland Boxing Club in Tiger's Bay in 2005 and lifted the Irish senior flyweight championship in 2009, defeating David Oliver Joyce in the final.

He also earned a silver medal at the 2007 European Union Amateur Boxing Championships in Dublin, losing to France's Khedafi Djelkhir in the final. Frampton is one of Ireland's most successful amateur boxers of recent years, winning 114 of his battles and losing just 11 times.

Frampton, a young man who grew up in a Unionist neighborhood of Belfast, answered "I get asked all the time, would you have boxed for Great Britain?" says the Irish team leader.' And the answer is no'. "I was looked after by Irish boxing from early 11 years old, and was immensely proud to box for Ireland." "It's very sad to know that so many people are behind me from all around Ireland and mainland the United Kingdom," the narrator said.

Professional career

After winning the 2009 Irish featherweight finals, Frampton turned professional. With a card that included Grzegorz Proksa and Ajose Olusegan, Jr., fought in his first competitive match at the Olympia, Liverpool, in England, in June 2009, defeating Sandor Szinavel in a second-round knock-out. He was named Ireland's Prospect of the Year at the Irish National Boxing Awards in January 2010. In September 2010, he defeated Ukrainian Yuri Voronin "electrifying" victory over the Ukrainian Yuri Voronin in front of a packed Ulster Hall audience, which included Daniel Day-Lewis. The win prompted the Belfast Telegraph to liken him to a "reincarnation" of Barry McGuigan.

Frampton won his first professional title, the BBBC Celtic super-bantamweight championship, in December 2010, defeating Scottish boxer Gavin Reid in the Ulster Hall. Frampton referred to the super-bantamweight division as "super hot" after his win, and suggested Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe as potential opponents. He then won by a narrow margin in TKO over Venezuelan Oscar Chacin, and later on fought his first defense of his BBBofC Celtic title against Welshman Robbie Turley in June 2011, winning by a unanimous decision after ten rounds.

Carl was a replacement for Kiko Martinez at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on September 10th for the Commonwealth super-bantamweight title, winning by a fourth-round TKO stoppage. On January 28, 2012, he successfully defended his Commonwealth title against Kris Hughes in the York Hall, with the match having to be called off in the seventh round. Frampton dominated the game from the start and was never threatened by his foel, according to the BBC, and was never threatened by his foe. Frampton defended his title against Prosper Ankrah of Ghana, which was rewarded by a second-round TKO stoppage on March 17, 2012. "I don't know if he likes it," Frampton said after his win, but if he does, he should tell his promoter."

Frampton won the vacant IBF Inter-continental super-bantamweight title over the weekend's undercard of Carl Froch vs. Lucian Bute in Nottingham, United Kingdom, beating fellow unbeaten contender Rael Hirales, Jr. (previously 16–0, 8 KO's) of Mexico by a unanimous decision. On the 26th of May 2012, a brawl took place. Frampton took on former two-time world champion Steve Molitor on September 22, 2012, on September 22, 2012. Martin Lindsay and Paul McCloskey were among the fighters in Belfast's Odyssey Arena. Frampton's sixth-round TKO was a hit, with the former champion appearing on the canvas three times throughout the match. Frampton said he was able to "fight anyone" and that he was "ready for a world championship match" after the match.

In the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on February 9, Carl Frampton met hard-punching Spaniard Kiko Martinez against 8,000 of his home fans. Martnez, the European champion, had earlier knocked out Bernard Dunne in 86 seconds to win the title, and had never been knocked down. Frampton won the European super-bantamweight title and retained the IBF Intercontinental super-bantamweight crown by TKO in Round 9. Frampton said, "I just want the people of Belfast to be proud of me" and that his defeated opponent was "hard as nails" after the war. Martinez defeated the Colombian Jonatan Romero in the sixth round of the IBF in August 2014.

Frampton defended his EBU and IBF Intercontinental titles in an IBF title eliminator against IBF fourth-ranked Jeremy Parodi on October 19th. The sport took place at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, in front of a maximum capacity of 9,000 people. At the end of the sixth round, Frampton knocked Parodi out with a body shot. Frampton defeated Hugo Cazares of Mexico at the Odyssey Arena on April 4, 2014, becoming the final eliminator for Leo Santa Cruz's WBC super-bantamweight title. Frampton defeated Cazares in the second round by a sold-out crowd of 9,000 people, with a left hook to the head.

Frampton fought for his first world title on September 6, 2014, defeating Kiko Martinez (31-4, 23 KOs). The IBF superbantamweight title was at stake, and the fight took place in a basement at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast. Frampton said of Martinez: "He's very emotional and that's what makes him dangerous; he's a hot-head; he's going to win." Frampton lost in the fifth round to a unanimous decision after two scores of 119-108 and one score of 118–111, his first world title. "I've got the world championship," Frampton said after the match. I'm feeling a little emotional because it has been a long time coming, it has been a tough ride. "I intend to keep it for a long time." "I'll fight him in Manchester, I'll fight him anywhere" he said as part of a unification contest with WBA champion Scott Quigg, who went on to say "I'll fight him in Manchester. "This kid has every chance to be the best Irish fighter there has ever been," Barry McGuigan said of him after the war.

Frampton was selected for the 2014 RTE Sports Person of the Year Award as a result of his appearances. He was named Britain's Coolest Man by ZOO Magazine in 2015, defeating David Beckham, Tom Hardy, and Ed Sheeran for the award. "I couldn't believe it when they told me, it was a wind-up," Frampton said after receiving the award. But it's great, particularly because it's ZOO readers and the people of Britain who have voted for me. "It's also great for the game of boxing."

In the 2016 New Year Honours for services to boxing, Frampton was named Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Frampton will make his first defense of his title against American Chris Avalos (25-2, 19 KOs) at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in December 2014. The fight in the United Kingdom had been picked up by ITV. Frampton was spared during the war against then-unbeaten Horacio "Violent" Garca, who later met each other in 2017. The arena was packed with a sell-out crowd of 11,000 people. In a one-sided, fifth-round knockout, Frampton defended his world title against Avalos, where referee Foster waved off the match at 1 minute, 33 seconds. On ITV, there were 1.1 million viewers and a record of 1.9 million viewers.

Frampton will defend his IBF World championship against 22-year-old Alejandro González Jr. live on ITV on July 18th. Gonzalez, a huge underdog, scored two knockdowns in the first round and appeared to have disregarded Frampton's plans. Frampton shook off the knockdowns, returned to full throttle, and the Premier Boxing Champions card on CBS had a dramatic final decision. On the scorecards, Frampton defeated 116–108, 108, and 115–109. Referee Mark Calo-Oy warned González for taking a poor blow in the second round and then took away a point when doing it again in the third round. From there, Frampton ruled the fight from there. Frampton connected on 246 of 692 blows (36 percent), while Gonzalez landed 145 of 593 (24 percent), according to CompuBox punch estimates. At 10:55 p.m. on ITV, the contest attracted 1.7 million viewers and topped at 2.4 million.

Frampton defeated his long-awaited rival, undefeated WBA super-bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (31-0-2, 23 KOs), in front of a sell-out audience in Manchester on February 27, 2016. Frampton won by a split decision, 113–115, 112, 116–112. Frampton was in complete control of the first half of the fight, during which Quigg simply couldn't find his range, but Quigg finally came alive down the stretch as the game devolved into a tussle, but Frampton was as good as he got.

Frampton did not want to face Guilerrmo Rigondeaux in his next match, according to multiple media outlets in March 2016. The WBA wrote to Frampton on March 11, 2016, asking that the press reports were accurate and demanding that he confirm his intentions on or before March 16, 2016. There was no response from the WBA. In addition, Rigondeaux's representatives were not approached by anyone on Frampton's behalf to seek a fight. "In light of Frampton's announcement that they will face an opponent other than his mandatory," says WBA chairman Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, "and for failing to respond to WBA questions as to his motives, Frampton's recognition as Champion has been suspended."

Frampton dropped a weight class to face Léo Santa Cruz, an undefeated Mexican (32-0-1, 22 KO's), for the WBA (Super) featherweight title at the Barclays Center in New York City on July 30, 2016. Frampton defeated Santa Cruz by a 12-round majority decision in a potential year-of-the-year battle, beating a crowd of 9,062. One judge awarded it a 114-114 draw, but others declared Frampton the king, 116-112, 117–111. Despite both fighters landing equal numbers of punches, Frampton had a higher success rate. Frampton landed 242 of 668 punches (36 percent), while Santa Cruz landed on 255 of 1,002 blows (25 percent), according to CompuBox figures. Frampton said he wanted to protect the honor in his hometown city but not want to rule out a rematch. "It's a dream come true," Frampton said in the article. I had aspired to win a world championship, but I never thought I'd win in two divisions. It was a tough fight. I wanted a war that the people could recall. Santa Cruz is a very nice guy. He was a true warrior." Frampton promised to smash records and become the first Irishman to win world championships at three different weights. The fight attracted 480,000 viewers and reached 549,000.

A rematch between Frampton and Santa Cruz was finalized in October, and it was immediately post-round. The fight was scheduled in Frampton's home town of Belfast; however, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas would be the first time Frampton has battled there since becoming a professional. The date was set for 28 January 2017. Frampton lost his position by majority decision in a field of 10,085 people. Santa Cruz and Frampton immediately expressed interest in a new war, perhaps in Belfast. Frampton's purse was $1 million less than Santa Cruz's $900,000. Frampton only delivered 133 of his 592 punches (22 percent), whereas Santa Cruz landed 230 of his 884 thrown (26%). According to Nielsen Media Research, the combat averaged 57,000 viewers and topped out at 643,000 viewers.

Frampton was ranked number two by the WBA at super featherweight on May 14, 2017, indicating to several that he is on his way to become the world champion. By the end of May, negotiations against IBF champion Lee Selby had begun. Barry McGuigan, Frampton's manager, said the fight would take place but not immediately due to Selby's mandatory fight next. Frampton branded Selby a "time waster" on June 15 and revealed that he would return to the ring in Belfast against an unidentified foe. Frampton will face Andrés Gutiérrez, a 23-year-old Mexican boxer, (35-7-1, 25 KOs), at the SSE Arena in Belfast in a WBC eliminator, according to Cyclone Promotions. Frampton weighed 1 lb. the day before the fight. There are over the 126-pound maximum. The fight was to continue without being an eliminator, so it was likely that it would go forward. Frampton apologized to his followers for the change of events.

Gutiérrez's slipped in his hotel shower later that day and developed a gash to his chin. He had also broken out some teeth and bruised his head, according to the report. The match was, therefore, called off. McGuigan was expected to be dissatisfied, but ticket holders were advised to keep their tickets in case the card was rescheduled. Cyclone Promotions, along with the SSE Arena and the Gutiérrez camp, said they would work quickly to reschedule the fight.

The war was called off completely on August 17, 2017 despite it being announced on August 17th. The news came after it was announced that Frampton would be working with long-time promoter Cyclone Promotions. A date in November was considered, but it was unsuitable for both boxers. On August 22, 2017, Frampton officially announced the end of Cyclone Promotions. Shane McGuigan will still be trained by him, according to the tweet.

Frampton will reportedly sign ex boxer Jamie Moore as his mentor in early September, according to reports. Frampton named Moore as his new boss on September 6th. Frampton signed a MTK Global deal on September 19th, who will act on his behalf as advisors. Frampton's deal with British promoter Frank Warren had been rumored on September 23. Frampton's split from Cyclone made it clear that he would only sign with a promoter who could guarantee him a stadium fight in Ireland. A day later, Frampton revealed that he had come from America and the United Kingdom, but that it came down to two very similar offers from Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren. I'm keen to get to work and have a fight before Christmas, and I can tell you that I will be fighting in Belfast." In the first half of 2018, he wanted to win a world championship.

Frampton will face an unidentified opponent in Belfast on November 18, 2017 at the SSE Arena, according to the official press conference of the promotional announcement. This will set the stage for a world championship match at Windsor Park in May/June 2018, according to Warren Buffett. Frampton will face Mexican boxer Horacio Garca (33-3-1, 24 KOs) in a ten-round match on October 4th. "I asked for a ten-round fight," Frampton said when talking about the match. I'd be able to play twelve rounds, but after the bad year I've had and the long layoff, Frampton's first fight since February 2015 was the first sincere play of the IBF super-bantamweight championships.

The contest was fought at 127 pounds. Canelo lvarez, Garca's faithful, was introduced to the crowd of 10,000 pro-Frampton supporters. In what was not his best showing in a long time, Frampton defeated a tenacious and tough opponent in Garca after ten rounds. The three judges' scores were 98–93, 97–93, and 98–93. The confrontation was getting closer for some on ringside, but Frampton prevailed nevertheless. Frampton's start was good, but ring-rust became a problem. Garca regularly trapped Frampton against the ropes and compelled him to retaliate with body shots from the fourth round. Frampton was disqualified after Garca's left hook in round 7. Victor Loughlin, who was standing behind Frampton when the punch arrived, started to count. It was a punch that dropped Frampton from Loughlin's perspective. It could have been ruled a legitimate snoop, according to replays. Frampton admitted that he let himself get into a brawl. "I thought it was a good fight and I believe it was much better than me," says the man. I was boxing glorious at the start but then he let me drag him into a fight. I wanted it to be a long fight, but the cobwebs have broken, and I want one of the big boys. "I will let the team determine who I will fight next." Both Frampton and Warren said there will be another confrontation in the spring of 2018 and a Summer clash at Windsor Park.

Frampton will face former four-weight world champion Nonito Donaire (38-4, 24 KOs) as a potential opponent in December 2017. Donaire's promoter Richard Schaefer and Frank Warren began talks on December 19th. Frank Warren declared the fight on the 21st of December via the BoxNation Facebook page on the SSE Arena in Belfast. It was revealed that the WBO interim title would be up for debate a month before the match.

Frampton won the WBO interim featherweight title after a defensive showing and defeated Donaire in a unanimous vote. Frampton's 117-111 defeat was decided by the three judges. Frampton fought hard to gain a strong lead and then began to fight on the backfoot in the sixth round. Donaire had more success in the later rounds of the tournament than fracturing Frampton on several occasions, with a tough left hook in round 11.

Donaire was cut off from his right eye following a mistaken clash of heads in round 7, with the referee failing to schedule a time out. "I didn't have to get involved in a fight there," Frampton said on live television, "I didn't have to get involved in a fight there." Nonito Donaire, a violent motherfucker, is a dangerous motherfucker. I made it to the round and stuck to my game plan. Windsor Park is the only thing on my mind, and I can't wait to get there." Frampton landed 164 of 557 punches (29%) and Donaire landed 104 of his 447 thrown (23%), according to CompuBox Stats.

On May 1, 2018, promoter Frank Warren announced that Windsor Park in Belfast had been reserved for Frampton's next fight on August 18th. Despite the fact that a big name was feared, Frampton announced that it would be unlikely. It will not be a world championship match, according to Heard, it will not be a national championship match. Warren announced that Fury would also be on the undercard after former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury defeated Sefer Seferi in his comeback fight on June 9th. In a fight that will see Frampton defend his WBO interim belt, 33-year-old Australian boxer Luke Jackson (16-0, 7 KOs) was declared unbeaten on June 18th. In 16 fights going into the fight, Jackson, a professional, was undefeated since 2013. Jackson was in light at 124.7 pounds. To reach the featherweight maximum of 126 pounds, Frampton had to lose his shorts. Frampton won round 9 after his corner threw in the towel in front of 24,000 fans. At 1 minute and 21 seconds of the round, the match was called off. Frampton dominated the match from the start, with Jackson eventually dropping Jackson with a body shot late in round 8. Jackson woke up but went for shots. Jackson had no success. Frampton said, "This was unreal." The atmosphere was fantastic, the audience was huge, and they made my dream come true. Frampton won the WBO interim title, from start to finish. It was also Frampton's first victory in seven fights since 2015. Jackson ruptured his left ear drum in round 3 and his right ear drum in round 6. His right eye had swollen shut in a Jackson photo. Although he wanted to finish the war, he respected his team's decision to end the war.

Warren immediately after Frampton's victory over Jackson, he announced that Frampton will face IBF featherweight champion Josh Warrington, who was also present and ringing. Warren announced that the fight would be held in December 2018 and be shown live and exclusive on BT Sport Box Office, BT's latest pay-per-view website. Boxing Scene announced on August 28 that a press conference would be held in the coming weeks, with the fight expected to take place at the Manchester Arena. Warren wanted the fight to take place in a stadium, but did not want any mandates to get in the way because a stadium brawl is likely to take place in Spring 2019. Frampton would earn about £2 million for the war, according to the reports. The match was scheduled to take place at the Manchester Arena on September 15th. Warrington weighed 125.6 pounds and Frampton was slightly heavier at 125.9 pounds, despite both achieving the featherweight limit. Frampton was disqualified by a unanimous decision. In favour of Warrington, the judges ruled 116–112, 116-112 and 116–113.

Emmanuel Dominguez was his first fight after losing to Warrington on August 10, 2019. Frampton was forced to pull out of the fight after a large concrete ornament mistakenly struck his left hand, fracturing his metacarpal.

He gained weight after his hand healed, and he met Tyler McCreary on November 30 in Las Vegas's Cosmopolitan. Frampton came out as the aggressor from the first bell, causing McCreary to go defensive. Frampton's opponent was defeated by a left-right combination to his body in the sixth round, causing him to collapse on one knee. At the count of nine, McCleary was back on his feet to continue fighting. Frampton landed two left hooks to the chest in the ninth, causing McComb to take a knee. He thrashed the referee's count once more to see out the remainder of the fight on his feet. Frampton was named the winner by unanimous decision after the ten-round tournament was concluded, with all three judges scoring the match 100-88. "I know he's a champion," Frampton said in a post-fight interview as she discussed a potential match with WBO junior-lightweight champion Jamel Herring, who was sitting ringside." I just want to fight for a world championship next month. I want to be involved in big fights. I would love to fight Jamel if I had the opportunity. I'm not the champion. He's the king of the world.

His next fight was scheduled to take place in Belfast, against WBO champion Jamel Herring on June 13, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bout was postponed. With no imminent date in sight, both fighters went for a stay-busy brawl.

The stay-busy contest between Frampton and Armenian opposition Vahram Vardanyan was scheduled for August 15th, 2020 against Armenian opponent Vahram Vardanyan at the York Hall. Vardanyan was unable to obtain a visa to enter the United Kingdom, so British featherweight champion Darren Traynor was brought in as a late replacement. In round six, Frampton dropped his much larger opponent to the ground with a left hook to the body. Frampton's attack to the body halted Traynor's feet after another left hook landed. Frampton moved one step closer to a potential match with Herring, with Herrings as the sole obstacle remaining obstacle.

The WBO ordered Herring to face Shakur Stevenson's mandatory challenger before January 2021, putting the long-proposed war against Frampton in jeopardy. In a voluntary defence against Frampton, the WBO gave Herring an exception during the next month. It was announced in January 2021 that the bout would take place in London on February 27. However, the bout was postponed again after Frampton sustained a hand injury, with the scene changing to Dubai. Frampton was ranked #3 by the WBO at super featherweight. Frampton's right eye was released above Herring's right eye in the fourth round on the night. Frampton was thrown straight to the ground by a straight left hand in the fifth. Frampton was knocked down for the second time in the sixth round, this time from a left uppercut. Frampton made it back to his feet on unsteady legs before the referee's count of ten, only to be met with a flurry of punches from Herring, prompting Frampton's manager to abandon the team and give Frampton a sixth-round technical knockout loss.

Frampton revealed his resignation in a post-fight interview, saying, "I said before the fight that I'd retire if I lost." That's just what I'm going to do. I've been away for far too long. I missed them growing up, as well as my own children. I want to give my life to my family. Boxing has been helpful to me in the recent years, but it has also been detrimental to me. I've loved the best years of my career, but now I want to go home to my beautiful wife and children."
