Walter Edward Cox, also known as Bud Cort, is an American actor and comedian best known for his appearances of Harold in Hal Ashby's film Harold and Maude (1971) and the eponymous hero in Robert Altman's film Brewster McCloud (1970).

Career

Cort was discovered in a revue by director Robert Altman, who later appeared him in two of his films, M*A*S*H and Brewster McCloud, in which he appeared in title roles. In Harold and Maude, Cort played his best-known role as the suicide-obsessed Harold. Despite the fact that it was not particularly popular on debut, it has since gained international fame and is now considered a American classic.

Cort died in 1979 after being trapped by an abandoned car on the Hollywood Freeway, where he collided with an abandoned vehicle blocking a lane into which he was turning. He fractured an arm and a leg, suffered a concussion, and a fractured skull. His face was laced and his lower lip was nearly severed. Years of plastic surgery, large hospital bills, a lost court case, and the deterioration of his career followed.

He has appeared in a number of film, stage, and television roles since: Endgame, Sledge Hammer!, The Chocolate War, Theodore Rex, Dogma, But I'm A Cheerleader, Pollock, The Twilight Zone, The Secret Diary of Sigmund Freud, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Edgar the computer in the film Electric Dreams; Toyman, a Superman villain whose series includes a few DCAU titles, including Superman: The Animated Series, Static Shock, and Justice League Unlimited; and Josiah Wormwood in an episode of the earlier DCAU version Batman: The Animated Series. In the English-language version of The Little Prince (2015), he premiered out of competition at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and received the César Award for Best Animated Film in February 2016. In 2016, Netflix introduced it to American audiences.

Cort appeared on Ugly Betty's November 8, 2007 episode as the priest officiating Wilhelmina Slater's ill-fated wedding. He appeared on Criminal Minds in 2010, portraying elderly pedophile Roger Roycewood, who was kidnapped and killed young children alongside his wife. In the second season of Eagleheart's second season, he appeared as the artist "Gleeko" in 2012.
