Marc Singer (born January 29, 1948) is a Canadian-born American actor best known for his role in the Beastmaster film series as Mike Donovan in the 1980s TV series V, as well as his portrayal in Dallas as Matt Cantrell.

Early life

Singer was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He has two brothers (Claude and Gregory) as well as Lori, an actress. Jacques Singer, his father, was a symphony conductor, and his mother, Leslie (née Wright), a concert pianist, and his sister, Lori, are an actor and cellist. The singer is of Jewish descent.

In 1974, Haunani Minn married a Hawaiian-born actress. She died in November 2014.

Career

Singer appeared in the sequel to Col. Warner's older son Andy before he started his career as an actor in the sequel to the miniseries Roots. He had originally trained for Jim Warner, but the producers felt he was more appropriate for the role.

Singer had a small breakthrough in the Planet of the Apes television series in 1970s portraying a gladiator.

He made his name in early 1980s films with the film The Beastmaster and its sequels, in which he appeared in the title role, Dar, and as Mike Donovan in the 1983 miniseries V: The Final Battle.

Other roles include the 1982 film If You Could See What I Hear (where he portrayed blind musician Tom Sullivan), Body Chemistry, Something for Joey (as footballer John Cappelletti), Watchers II, High Desert Kill, Go Tell the Spartans, and Dead Space, as well as General Klaus Von Kraut in A Man Called Sarge.

On Batman: The Animated Series, the singer portrayed the Man-Bat character. He has appeared in television shows, including Barnaby Jones, where he appeared in the episode "Trap Play" (01/07/1975). This is a role he played alongside Nick Nolte in the early years. In another episode of Barnaby Jones titled "Price of Terror" (10/10/75), he appeared in another episode. Matt Cantrell appeared in season nine ("the dream season") of Dallas; Simon & Simon; She Wrote; The Young and the Restless; The Ray Bradbury Theater and Highlander: The Series.

Singer is an actor who performs in theater and appeared in Petruchio in the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.). Taming of the Shrew was a play by Shakespeare, as well as Christian in Cyrano de Bergerac. Both Taming of the Shrew and Cyrano were shot.

Singer appeared in the last episode of season 2 of the new version of V, on March 15, 2011; however, rather than repeating his role as Mike Donovan, he plays Lars Tremont. On The CW television series Arrow's third season, he appeared as General Matthew Shrieve.
