Buck Owens Jr., an American musician, singer, songwriter, and band leader Alvis Edgar Owens Jr. (August 12, 1929 – March 25, 2006) was a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and band leader.
He was the front man for Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, who had 21 No. 21. On the Billboard country music charts, 1 hits.
He pioneered what was later known as the Bakersfield sound, which was named in honor of Bakersfield, California, Owens' adopted home, and the city from which he took inspiration for his own "American music." Although the Buckaroos never featured a fiddle and retained pedal steel guitar, they's sound on stage and onstage was always more stripped down and elemental.
Owens' signature style was based on simple story lines, infectious choruses, a twangy electric guitar, an insistent beat provided by a drum track, and high, two-part harmonies starring Owens and his guitarist Don Rich from 1969 to 1986.
Buddy Allen (Owens), Rich's tragic 1974 death devastated him and hampered his creative efforts until he appeared with Dwight Yoakam in 1988. Owens is a member of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Personal life
Owens married four times, three ending in divorce and one annulment. Bonnie Campbell Owens, a country singer, married him in 1948. Both the children had two brothers, one of whom was Buddy Alan, and they divorced in 1951.
Owens married Phyllis Buford in 1956, with whom he had a third son. He wed Buckaroos fiddle player Jana Jae Greif in 1977. He applied for annulment within a few days but then changed his mind; the couple's on-and-off marriage lasted for a year before divorcing. Jennifer Smith was married in 1979.
Buddy Alan (who charted multiple hits as a Capitol recording artist in the early 1970s and appeared with his father on Hee Haw) and Michael Owens were both Owens.
Owens recovered from oral cancer in the early 1990s, but he had additional health problems in the early 2000s and early 2000s, including pneumonia and a minor stroke in 2004. He had to cancel his regular weekly performances with the Buckaroos at his Crystal Palace due to his health issues. Owens died in his sleep of a suspected heart attack at his ranch just north of Bakersfield on March 25, 2006, just hours after he played at his club. He was 76 years old.
