Bryce Seligman DeWitt (January 8, 1923 – September 23, 2004) was an American theoretical physicist who investigated gravity and field theories.
Life
Carl Bryce Seligman was born in 1950, but his three brothers, including the noted ichthyologist Hugh Hamilton DeWitt, adopted "DeWitt" from their mother's side of the family, at the request of their father in 1950. This change of name in the early 1970s angered Felix Bloch that he barred DeWitt's appointment to Stanford University and Cecile DeWitt-Morette, a mathematical physicist, from teaching at the University of Texas at Austin. DeWitt served as a naval aviator in World War II. At the age of 81, he died on September 23, 2004 from pancreatic cancer. He was buried in France and was survived by his wife and four children.
