Background and early years
Arthur Bryce Courtenay was born in Lebombo Mountains, South Africa, the son of Maude Greer and Arthur Ryder. Ryder married six children and spent his time with his family, but he also had a close friendship with Greer, with whom he already had a child, Rosemary. Both her children were given the surname Courtenay by Maude Greer. Bryce Courtenay spent the majority of his childhood in a small village in the Limpopo province's Lebombo Mountains. He later attended King Edward VII School in Johannesburg.
Courtenay met Benita Solomon in 1955 while researching journalism in London. They immigrated to Sydney in 1958, married in 1959, and had three children – Brett, Adam, and Damon.
Courtenay came into the industry and spent 34 years as the Creative Director of McCann Erickson, J. Walter Thompson, and George Patterson Advertising. The original Milkybar Kid commercial was among his award-winning campaigns.
Courtenay and Geoff Pike created the Cadbury Yowie, a chocolate that contained a children's toy and most likely an Australian or New Zealand native animal.
Damon, a courtenay son with the blood disease haemophilia, died at the age of 24 from AIDS-related problems that were contracted during a blood transfusion.
During their 42-year marriage, Courtenay divorced Benita in 2000 and admitted to sexual affairs with other women. Benita Courtenay died on March 11, 2007, at the age of 72, four months after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. With his second wife, Christine Gee, he later lived in Canberra.
