Brooke Astor Life

Roberta Brooke Astor (née Russell, 1902-1902 – August 13, 2007) was an American philanthropist, socialite, and writer who was the chairwoman of the Vincent Astor Foundation, which had been established by her third husband, John Jacob Astor IV, son of America's first multi-millionaire, John Jacob Astor IV.

Brooke Astor was the author of two books and two volumes of personal memoirs.

Early life

Brooke Astor was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the sole child of John Henry Russell Jr., the Marine Corps' 16th Commandant, and his mother, Mabel Cecile Hornby Howard. John Henry Russell Sr., her paternal grandfather, served as a rear admiral in the United States Navy. She was named after her maternal grandmother (Roberta) and was known as Bobby to close friends and relatives.

She spent considerable of her childhood in China, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and other places due to her father's work. She attended The Madeira School for a short time in 1919 but later graduated from Holton-Arms School. She kept diaries, letters, and drawings from her travels as a child, which were included in an illustrated version of her memoir "Patchwork Child: Early Memories" in 1993.

Anderson Cooper is slammed by best-selling author Meryl Gordon for recycling her own work for his new book on the Astors: 'It was kind of stunning'

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 12, 2023
Meryl Gordon wrote a 2009 book in which Brooke Astor's son was convicted of manipulating her to change her will. Anderson Cooper's latest book, according to her, depends on her work. On September 19, the CNN star, who has also written a book about his own family, the Vanderbilts, will release Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune. "I was ashamed that he added so little to the story," Gordon told DailyMail.com.'
