Mary Cheney Life

Mary Claire Cheney (born March 14, 1969) is Dick Cheney's younger daughter and his partner, Lynne Cheney.

During the Hollingsworth v. Perry case, she is politically centrist and is active with a number of advocacy organizations. She was a signatory to an amicus curiae brief submitted to the US Supreme Court in favor of same-sex marriage.

Early life and education

Cheney was born in Madison, Wisconsin. She attended McLean High School in McLean, Virginia, class 1987. She attended Colorado College, her mother and sister's alma mater, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and graduated in 1991. In 2002, she received a master's degree from the University of Denver.

Personal life

Mary Cheney has been married to Heather Poe since 1992.

Cheney has praised same-sex marriage and has been credited with her father's acceptance of it, which he has publicly supported since leaving the vice presidency.

Mary Cheney was announced pregnant in December 2006. The baby's mother, Emily Poe, were reportedly "ecstatic" about it. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesperson Lea Anne McBride said on December 5.

"This is a baby," Mary Cheney said in a forum hosted by Glamour Magazine at Barnard College of Columbia University on January 31, 2007. This is a blessing from God. It is not a political remark. It is not a prop to be used in a debate between two people on either side of a controversy. It's my child. In May 2007, she gave birth to her first child, a boy.

Cynthia Leive, editor in chief of Glamour, asked Cheney if she had anything to tell to opponents like James Dobson, who has condemned same-sex marriage and LGBT people raising children. Cheney accused Dobson of distorting the findings, adding that "nothing in the last 20 years has shown there is no difference between children raised by same-sex parents and children raised by opposite-sex parents; what matters is being raised in a secure, loving environment." Dobson's right to his opinion, she continued, "but not someone whose endorsement I've ever really wanted."

On November 18, 2009, Cheney gave birth to her second child, a daughter. Cheney and Poe were married in Washington, D.C., on June 22, 2012. The family lives in Great Falls, Virginia.

During an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Mary Cheney's older sister Liz, who was running for a seat in Wyoming, said that she did not endorse same-sex marriage. "Either You think both families should be treated equally or not," Mary Cheney wrote in a Facebook post. Liz's goal is to treat my family as second class citizens. Mary later decided that she did not endorse her sister's candidacy and that she did not attend the remainder of the Cheney family for Christmas this year.

"Liz has spent time and shared holidays with our children," Heather Poe wrote in a Facebook post in 2013, and she and her husband were thrilled to tell us how happy she was for our family. To say the least, having her now say that she does not support our right to marry is insensitive.

"I don't have to answer it" if she and her sister's relationship had been mended in 2015, Mary Cheney said. However, Liz in 2021 told 60 Minutes they had reconciled after she told Mary that she had disputed her views on same-sex marriage.
