Brian Michael Smith (born January 29, 1983) is an American actor best known for his appearances in OWN's Queen Sugar, as well as appearances on NBC's Chicago P.D., HBO's Girls, and Showtime's Homeland.
He was introduced to the Generation Q cast in June 2019.
Early life
Smith's mother, Ingrid Smith, an event planner and Ford Motor Company employee, was raised on the east side of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the help of a close-knit family. He and his mother spent his early years with aunts, cousins, and an adopted brother. Despite being born female, he identifies and was perceived as male throughout his childhood. He resisted pressures to fulfill his ostensible gender role by excelling and athletics.
He played offensive end and fullback on the boys football team in the fall and set records in shot put and pole vaulting on the girls track & field team in the spring. Smith made history by becoming the first female at-birth student to score a varsity touchdown in the state of Michigan on September 17, 1999.
Career
Smith studied acting and video production at Kent State University. After graduation, he began teaching drama and media literacy to teenagers before moving to New York City to pursue a career in acting.
In 2011, Terry Knickerbocker began training at the William Esper Studio, where he began training under Terry Knickerbocker. He appeared on several television shows and a Toyota commercial opposite Eli Manning while studying.
As a member of several companies, including Gotham City Improv, as well as acting in off-Broadway and regional theater in a handful of plays, including Women Are Crazy Because Men Are A**Holes and Mitch Albom's Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, he has also explored the stage, sketching, and improv comedy.
He received his first speaking role in Season 4 of HBO's Girls opposite Jemima Kirke and Adam Driver in 2015. This was followed by similar roles on television shows, including Blue Bloods, Person of Concern, and Law & Order: SVU. Since its revival, Michael Smith will appear in the second season of 9-1-1: Lone Star.
On OWN's series Queen Sugar, Smith was cast as Officer Antoine "Toine" Wilkins. Toine is a trans man. The Louisiana-set drama, executive produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey, focuses on the lives and loves of the departed Bordelon siblings. The performance is based on Natalie Baszile's book Queen Sugar.
