He appeared with the Celtics, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Los Angeles Lakers throughout his NBA career. He was a member of four squads that made NBA Finals appearances: 1995 with the Magic, 2001, and 2002 with the Lakers (winning three NBA championships with the Lakers).
He competed for the US national team in the 1986 FIBA World Championship, winning the gold medal. Shaw scored a crucial three-pointer in the closing seconds in the final between the US and Soviet Union. The American team took the game by two points.
Shaw joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999, reuniting with former Orlando teammate Shaquille O'Neal. As the Lakers had the league's best record in winning 67 games, he served as a back-up to All-Star shooting guard Kobe Bryant throughout the season and playoffs. Shaw appeared in all 22 of the Lakers' playoff games before losing to the Portland Trail Blazers in the Western Conference Finals. Before the Trail Blazers captured games 5 and 6, the Lakers took the lead in the series, tying the series at three games apiece. In game 7, the Trail Blazers lead 7-60 in the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, the Blazers exploded 5 for 23 points after being boosted by two critical three-point baskets from Shaw. To face the Indiana Pacers, the Lakers won the game and advanced to the NBA Finals. Shaw stepped up in game 3 in place of the injured Bryant and then played crucial minutes in the Lakers' overtime win in game 4. Shaw was named the NBA champion in Lakers' 4–2, and Shaw won his first NBA championship.
Shaw continued to back up Bryant in the 2000-01 season, but the team has only played in 28 games. In the 2001 NBA Finals, he was a key role for the Lakers as they thrashed the Philadelphia 76ers 4–1. In the 2001–02 season, the Lakers won their third championship before losing in the Western Conference Semifinals to the San Antonio Spurs, and Shaw then resigned following the season.

Shaw resigned after the 2002-03 season. During the 2003–04 season, he worked for the Lakers as an Oakland-based scout. During the 2004-2005 season, he was named assistant coach of the Lakers. Following Phil Jackson's demise, he was considered for the Lakers' head coaching position, but Mike Brown was ultimately dismissed in favour of Mike Brown.
Shaw left the Lakers to join the Indiana Pacers as an assistant coach. He was later promoted to associate head coach. Shaw was regarded as a highly respected assistant coach by other NBA coaches as well as the public.
Shaw was appointed as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets on June 25, 2013, after two years on the Pacers' bench, replacing former coach George Karl. He was fired by the Nuggets on March 3, 2015, after compiling a record of 56–85 (.397) in just under two seasons.
