Professional basketball career
Diaw competed for Pau-Orthez, a French professional basketball team, from 2001 to 2003. He appeared in the league's All-Star game and the Slam Dunk tournament in 2002.
Diaw was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as the 21st overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He began a multi-year contract with the Hawks on July 10, 2003.
He was traded to the Phoenix Suns in August 2005 with two future first round picks in exchange for future teammate Joe Johnson.
Diaw made his way into an all-round game in Phoenix, ranging from center to point guard, and earned the nickname "3D" for his multifaceted play (his motto being "drive, dish, defend") and the combination of his number (3) and surname. Diaw of France defeated the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship in 2000 with the French junior national team. Diaw was named captain of the senior men's French national basketball team in July 2006. At the EuroBasket 2005, he took home the bronze medal.
Diaw led the French team in the 2006 FIBA World Championships, scoring 107 points and 22 assists in nine games. In 2013, Diaw and the French team claimed the gold medal at the EuroBasket tournament. Executive career
Diaw became vice president and shareholder of the JSA Bordeaux basketball team in 2009, and he took power one year later. He resigned as the club's president in 2017.
