Omar Cook Life

Omar-Sharif Cook (born January 28, 1982) is an American-born, naturalized Montenegrin professional basketball player for Herbalife Gran Canaria of the Liga ACB.

He was also a member of Montenegro's national basketball team.

Since his freshman season, he is best known for avoiding the remaining three years of his college eligibility and drafting the 2001 NBA draft.

Many NBA scouts rated him as a top-ten overall prospect prior to entering the draft.

Omar Cook Career

Amateur career

Cook played high school basketball at Christ The King Regional High School and then played college basketball at St. John's University. During the one-year Cook spent at St. John's, he ranked second in the country and first in the Big East in assists. He also tied for the most assists in a game for a St. John's player with 17, against Stony Brook University.

Professional career

Cook was drafted by the Orlando Magic of the NBA as the third pick in the second round (31st overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft. He was drafted quickly by the Denver Nuggets but he didn't make the team due in part to his inability to shoot the ball effectively. Cook made several pre-season appearances for clubs in the league, as well as overseeing 22 regular season games (two with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2003–04 season and five with the Toronto Raptors in the 2004-05 season). He was drafted by the AAPBL in July 2005, but the league folded less than two weeks after the draft was published.

When playing with the Fayetteville Patriots, he also led the NBA D-League in steals and assists in the 2004–05 season. Cook's last NBA game was played on April 20th, 2005, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 104-95. Cook had 19 points, 9 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block in his last game.

Cook competed in the Belgian league with Dexia Mons-Hainaut in 2005–2006. He appeared with two clubs, SIG Strasbourg, France, and Samara, Russia Super League players, during the 2014 season. He appeared with Crvena zvezda in the Adriatic League in the 2007-08 season. He had his best season of his career with Crvena zvezda, where he was one of the team's leaders.

He joined Unicaja in the Spanish league on June 26, 2008, and spent two seasons with the club. He joined Power Electronics Valencia, a Spanish basketball team, in 2010.

He signed a two-year contract with Armani Jeans Milano in 2011. Cook joined Caja Laboral until the end of the season in December 2012, after Milano was barred from the Euroleague.

Cook signed with Lietuvos rytas of Lithuania for the 2013–14 season on August 6, 2013.

Cook signed a two-month contract with Budu Podgorica of Montenegro on September 30, 2014. On November 14, 2014, he extended his Budu'nost deal for the remainder of the season. He re-signed with Budunost for one more season on August 15, 2015.

Cook signed with Estudiantes, a Spanish club, in the 2016–17 season. Cook and Herbalife Gran Canaria agreed to a one-plus-one contract on July 17, 2019.

He has signed with San Pablo Burgos of the Liga ACB on July 24, 2020.

He joined Casademont Zaragoza of the Liga ACB on July 15, 2021.
