Bobby Ryan Life

Bobby Ryan (born Robert Shane Stevenson; March 17, 1987) is an American professional ice hockey winger for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL).

In the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, he was drafted second overall by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He spent six seasons with the Ducks before being traded to the Senators in 2013.

He has also competed in international and Olympic hockey for the United States.

Early life

Robert Shane Stevenson was born in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and grew up in Collingswood, attending Queen of Heaven for grade school.

In a booze binge, Ryan's father, Bob Stevenson, brutally beat Melody, leaving her hospitalized with four fractured ribs, a skull fracture, and a punctured lung. Ryan's father was charged with attempted murder and jumped bail before fleeing to Canada. His wife later discarded him, and she and Bobby joined him in Canada under assumed names. After watching Saving Private Ryan on television, Stevenson selected Ryan and his son followed it. Ryan and the family were later moved to El Segundo, California, so that Ryan could compete in an elite youth hockey feeder system. The United States Marshals Service arrested Ryan's father, who had been supporting the family as a professional gambler, at home in February 2000.

Ryan competed in the 2001 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Los Angeles Junior Kings minor ice hockey team.

Bobby Ryan Career

Playing career

Ryan, the Los Angeles Junior Kings, was the first member of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program at the Under-18 level after winning national championships with his minor hockey team. Ryan was picked by the Owen Sound Attack seventh overall in the 2003 OHL Draft Draft despite not warning Ontario Hockey League (OHL) teams that he would not play in major junior. He was eventually compelled to play for the team and began his major junior career with a 39-point rookie campaign in 2003–04. Ryan was drafted second overall by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft after rising to 89 points in the following season.

After the 2006-07 season, Ryan called off his OHL career. He was assigned by the Ducks to the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League (AHL) for the final eight games of the 2006–07 AHL season, after being disqualified in the playoffs. He then started the 2007-08 season with the Ducks, scoring his first NHL goal in his first appearance against the Los Angeles Kings at The O2 Arena in London, England. However, Ryan was sent back to Portland after four games. On March 7, 2008, he was recalled but he was ruled out for the remainder of the regular season due to Corey Perry's leg injury.

Ryan made the opening roster again in the 2008–09 season, but the Iowa Chops were to be sent down due to salary cap issues. He was activated during the season and scored his first hat trick of his NHL career, against Los Angeles on January 8, 2009, a 4–3 loss. He was the first rookie in Ducks history to record a hat trick, marking the fastest ever player in the franchise's 15-year history. Ryan tied for his 46th point in a victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on March 22, 2009, beating Dustin Penner's franchise rookie record.

Ryan, along with Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Kris Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks, were among the Calder Memorial Trophy's finalists on April 22, 2009—Mason ultimately received the award.

The Ducks signed Ryan to a five-year, $25.5 million contract extension on September 14, 2010, well before the 2010-11 season. While in the Ducks' offensive zone, left-handed captain Mikko Koivu stole Ryan's stick and scored a goal with it on December 12, right-handed Ryan picked up Koivu's stick and scored a goal. The play was later ranked number one on TSN's "Top ten NHL Oddities" list, and it was later named number one.

Ryan took part in Operation Hat Trick, a charity hockey game at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on November 24, 2012, to raise funds for Hurricane Sandy victims.

The Ottawa Senators acquired Ryan in exchange for forwards Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen, and a first-round draft pick in 2014 (used to select Nick Ritchie). Ryan scored 23 goals in his first season with the Senators, a season marred by injury—on March 27, 2014, it was announced on Twitter that he would have season-ending sports hernia surgery to fix an injury he had suffered with since November 2013.

The Senators reported on October 2, 2014, that Ryan had signed to a seven-year, $50.75 million contract extension, extending his stay with the team through the 2021–22 season. After being selected to represent Team Foligno at the 2015 NHL All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio, on January 25, 2015, Ryan made his first All-Star Game appearance.

Ryan struggled in the 2016–17 regular season, scoring only 25 points in 62 games while dealing with injuries. However, he was an asset to the team in the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs, scoring four goals in six games against the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs, assisting the Senators in qualifying for the second round against the New York Rangers. In game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins, he led the Senators to a halt in six goals and nine assists.

Ryan missed approximately three months while attending an NHL player assistance program in the 2019-20 season. Ryan later revealed that he had applied for the service as a result of ongoing struggles with alcohol use. In an away game against the Nashville Predators, he returned to NHL action on February 25, 2020. Ryan scored his fifth career hat trick in his first post-rehab home game two days later. The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy was given to Ryan by the NHL on September 7 for his perseverance and dedication to hockey.

Ryan was released on unconditional waivers on September 25, 2020, for the sole purpose of obtaining the last two years on his deal with the Senators. For the first time in his career, Ryan waived waivers and became a free agent.

Ryan signed with the Detroit Red Wings on October 9, 2020, the first day of free agency.

In a 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on January 16, 2021, Ryan scored his first goal for the Detroit Red Wings.
