Billy Sherwood Life

William Wyman Sherwood (born March 14, 1965, Las Vegas, Nevada) is an American singer, record designer, and mixing engineer. He is best known for his time as a member of progressive rock band Yes, including for their albums Open Your Eyes (1997) and The Ladder (1999).

He re-joined Yes in 2015, covering for (and eventually replacing) original bassist Chris Squire, who was on a sabbath in the band due to health problems right before his death on June 27, 2015.

Squire asked him to replace him and keep Yes going until his death.

He is well-known for his work with former and current Yes members in other capacities as well. In addition to his work with Yes, he is the frontman of nascent rock bands World Trade, Circa, and formerly Lodgic. After the death of original singer and bassist John Wetton, he and Yes bandmate Geoff Downes joined Asia in 2017.

He is also a solo performer, having released ten studio albums to date.

Billy Sherwood Career

Career

Sherwood's music career began when he was recruited by his brother Michael into a band named Lodgic. Billy performed bass and sang, while Michael played keyboards and sang back up. Guy Allison, Jimmy Haun on guitar, and Gary Starns on drums were among Lodgic's fans. In 1980, the band migrated to Los Angeles. They released their debut album Nomadic Sands in 1985 after many years of struggling to get stuff together.

Sherwood and Guy Allison formed a new band together after Lodgic's disbanded. World Trade was recruited by guitarist Bruce Gowdy and drummer Mark T. Williams to form World Trade. Sherwood and his bandmates took on the roles of engineer, mixer, and producer again in 1989, along with their band duties as bassist and lead singer. In 1995, Sherwood and his bandmates from World Trade rejoined Euphoria, with Jay Schellen replacing Williams on drums.

Sherwood reunited with World Trade in 2017 to record Unify, a new album that was released on August 4, 2017.

After singer and record executive Derek Shulman suggested his name, Sherwood was invited to meet Yes bassist Chris Squire in 1989. Yes had suffered a setback when singer Jon Anderson had left and founded Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (ABWH). Sherwood was invited to jam with fellow Yes members Squire, guitarist Trevor Rabin, drummer Alan White, and keyboardist Tony Kaye, with the intention of Sherwood on lead vocals. By the time the fivesome had performed any demos, they merged with ABWH members in 1990 to form Yes, an eight-man group that lasted until 1992. Both groups recorded songs for Union (1991), which includes Sherwood and Squire's first song, "The More We Live - Let Go." Sherwood formed a friendship with Squire that would lead him to work with him for the next 20 years.

Sherwood appeared on Yes in 1994 as an additional guitarist and keyboardist on their tour in favor of Talk (1994). Sherwood will co-produce, engineer, and mix the new studio tracks for their forthcoming studio albums, Keys to Ascension (1996) and Keys to Ascension 2 (1997). Sherwood and Squire began to write songs after Rick Wakeman's departure in 1997, which Yes decided to record on their forthcoming studio album, Open Your Eyes (1997). Sherwood had to leave the group as a full member, playing rhythm guitar and keyboards, which made him an excellent member of the group. Sherwood would be able to handle backing guitar and vocals for live shows after Igor Khoroshev's arrival in 1997. Sherwood left the band in 2000 after recording and touring their new album, The Ladder (1999). House of Yes: Live from the House of Blues in Las Vegas, Sherwood's hometown, was released as House of Yes: Live from the House of Blues.

Squire will be receiving acute erythroid leukemia treatment, according to it, and Yes will continue their 2015 North American tour with Sherwood filling Squire's role. Sherwood (along with other former and current members of Yes) issued a public statement expressing his displeasure following Squire's death on June 27, 2015. "Chris said to me, 'play the music, be yourself, and make me proud,' in reference to his new position as the now-permanent bassist for Yes.' "It's my deepest desire right now [to] live up to his aspirations." The Quest (2021), his first studio album since returning to the band, was The Quest (2021).

Sherwood, who left Yes, worked with Squire to release the album Conspiracy, which included some of the work they created together years before.

Sherwood's Unknown, another collection of conspiracy with Chris Squire, was released in 2003.

Sherwood has been working on new tribute albums, including Back Against the Wall and Return to the Moon, as tributes to Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Dark Side of the Moon. Tony Kaye's latest album is included in the latter.

Circa, a new band featuring Sherwood, Alan White, Tony Kaye, and Jimmy Haun was announced in 2007. Circa 2007's debut album Circa 2007 and a live DVD concert have been held in various live dates. Jay Schellen replaced White, who was displaced by him.

Circa's second studio album, Circa HQ, was released on the Internet on January 14, 2009. White was unable to be available this time due to his commitments with Yes (who had started a new tour). On the album, Sherwood's long-time collaborator, and drummer, Jay Schellen, was replaced by her. Sherwood and co. began a new project with former Toto artist Bobby Kimball after a brief international tour. Kimball, Sherwood, Tony Kaye, and Jimmy Haun formed Yoso, a new band formed in April 2009, and it debuted on their debut studio album. Haun's line-up was later cancelled (in order to re-focus on his adverts). Johnny Bruhns, a Yes tribute band guitarist, was fired by him. After a string of other drummers, Schellen decided to concentrate on his Asia work with John Payne and Scott Connor on drums. Yoso's band members were then disbanded.

What was the Question? Circa's fifth solo album debuted in 2011 with a new line-up of Sherwood, Kaye, Bruhns, and Connor, as Sherwood's fifth line-up. Sherwood produced, produced, arranged, and performed on The Prog Collective, an album that featured vocal or instrumental contributions from many of the progressive rock artists with whom he had collaborated over the years. He revived the idea with an Epilogue-inspired group of artists, which was published in 2013.

The official video to William Shatner's album Ponder The Mystery was released on October 8, 2013, as well as a sold-out tour with Circa. Steve Valiant, Robby Krieger, Al Di Meola, George Duke, Vince Gill, Dave Koz, Rick Wakeman, and Edgar Winter appear in the Mystery.

Sherwood re-grouped with Circa on July 8, 2016 to debut Valley Of The Windmill, their fourth album.

Squire put together the Chris Squire Experiment during the hiatus of Yes, with Sherwood as co-lead singer while playing some guitar and keyboards. Sherwood went on to record The Key with guitarist Marty Walsh, but the album would not be released until 1997.

Sherwood, a director and engineer, worked with Motörhead, Dangerous Toys, and Paul Rodgers (formerly of Free and Bad Company) as an engineer and engineer. Sherwood appeared on Toto's Kingdom of Desire album, as well as playing bass and singing. Jeffology, a tribute to Jeff Beck, was also on his collection. Sherwood's response to Talk on tour was that sherwood appeared on tour as an additional artist, playing guitar and keyboards for the tour.

Sherwood appeared alongside William Shatner in the Season 14 premiere of Hell's Kitchen, where they met the blue team as part of their reward for winning the signature dish challenge.

Sherwood is also known for writing the theme tune for the online anime series Kung Fu Jimmy Chow.

Sherwood performed on several tribute albums, including Dragon Attack, a tribute to Queen; Salute to AC/DC; and Crossfire, a salute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Sherwood would be filling in on bass and lead vocals for John Wetton for tour dates in the spring of 2017, Asia's first official announced it on January 11, 2017. Wetton was not selected by Wetton himself. Wetton died on January 31, 2017, but Sherwood and the tour continued. With Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal playing on guitar and lead vocals, and Sherwood remaining on only bass and backing vocals, Asia's lineup shifted in 2019.

Billy and his partner Elisa Furr, as well as Jay Schellen, Guy Allison, and John Thomas (who has worked with Vixen) formed a new band together in May 2019 with Furr on vocals.

Jon Davison, a fellow Yes member, unveiled Arc of Life with Sherwood and Schellen in July 2020. He also said they had completed an album that would be released late 2020 or early 2021. Dave Kerzner revealed the remainder of the band as himself and Jimmy Haun in early 2021. The album was released on February 12, 2021.

Sherwood produced and performed on his first solo album, The Big Peace, in 1999, when he performed all of the instruments and also produced. The album was supposed to be a back-to-basics of his progressive roots.

Billy Sherwood's third solo album, At the Speed of Life, was released in August 2008, for which he was nominated as the best Progressive Rock Producer that year.

Sherwood was composing on his tenth solo album, Citizen: In The Next Life, which was released on July 12, 2019.
