Career
The brothers began performing live in Magdeburg near their hometown of Loitsche at the age of 10. They appeared small shows, and although their audiences adored them, they were largely unknown. The band was lacking a drummer and bass player, so the twins relied on a keyboard to fill up other musical sounds.
In the audience of one of their shows, the brothers' year (12) and Gustav Schäfer (then 13) met Georg Listing (then 14) and Gustav Schäfer (then 13). Those who attended and watched were friends, and after the show, they'd loved what they heard and saw, and they wanted to join. The band was renamed "Devilish" after an article was published at the time that referred to their "devilishly good" sound. The foursome continued to perform, but until Kaulitz auditioned on the reality TV talent show "Star Search" from late 2002 to early 2003, they were not going anywhere.
This continued on until 2005, when Jost arranged a meeting between the band and Universal Music Group's Interscope Records and Tokio Hotel was signed. They began working straight after launching their debut LP Scherb ("Scream") later this year. "Durch den Monsoon" ("Through the Monsoon"), Schen's first single, which debuted in Germany within a month of its debut, debuted at number one.
Tokio Hotel opened in Germany to promote the introduction of Schrei and its singles. They toured Germany and later produced a live DVD. Kaulitz was praised on stage for his vivacious style and harmonizing with the audience (he'd often have the audience sing verses instead of him).
In the first part of Arthur and the Invisibles, Kaulitz portrayed Arthur.
At this time, Tokio Hotel were a household name in Germany, and the band was compelled to return to the studio due to the band's return to the studio. Tokio Hotel began working on their second album, Zimmer 483 (Room 483), in February 2007. "Übers Ende der Welt" ("Over the End of the World") was the album's first single; "Ready, Set, Go!" was released. "Spring is not" ("Don't Jump"), and "An deiner Seite (Ich bin da)" ("By Your Side (I am there)" are among the many aspects of "By Your Side" (I am there). In 2008, "Heilig" ("Holy"), a fourth single, was released as "Sacred"), and it was released as "Sacred" (Sacred).
To promote the unveiling of Zimmer 483, Tokio Hotel began a continental tour of Europe, spawning another live DVD and a substantial advertising boost.
Kaulitz and the band decided to re-record select songs from both Schwick and Zimmer 483 for a new English-language LP so that fans around the world could understand the band's songs. These re-recorded songs were to Tokio Hotel's debut English album, titled Scream. The album was released in Europe in mid-2007 (although with the title Room 483, a literal translation of Zimmer 483, to emphasize the album's continuity), but it didn't make it to the west until mid-2008.
Four singles were born, including "Scream," "Monsoon" (the literal translation of "Durch den Monsun"), "Don't Jump" (the translated version of "Spring Nicht"), and "Ready, Set, Go!" (This is the translated version of "Übers Ende der Welt"; not really a literal translation of the word). Scream was moderately successful internationally, and to promote its announcement, Tokio Hotel and Tokio Hotel left Europe for the first time in their careers, heading to the United States.
Tokio Hotel was the first to perform five shows in North America, beginning in Canada and ending in New York in February 2008. Tokio Hotel was the first German act since Nena to gain international recognition and maintain their reputation. The US tour was a success, but disaster struck when they returned to Europe for the 1000 Hotels Tour.
On March 3, 2008, the 1000 Hotels Tour in Brussels, Belgium, began, and it was scheduled to continue in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Scandinavia, ending on September 9th. Kaulitz started having voice difficulties in the middle of a show in Marseille, France, eleven days after the tour began, on March 14th. He encouraged the audience to perform more often, and the band reduced their setdown from twenty-one to sixteen songs.
Tokio Hotel cancelled a show in Lisbon, Portugal, two days after it was scheduled to begin. The band, with the exception of Kaulitz, arrived on stage and apologized for the performance's cancellation. Kaulitz was sick and was being flown back to Germany to see a specialist: he had attended forty-three shows without a break and had an untreated throat infection. On the singer's vocal cords, a cyst that had to be removed by larynx surgery was present. Kaulitz was unable to speak for ten days after being forced to attend speech therapy for one month.
Kaulitz had sufficiently recovered by May 2008, and the Tokio Hotel had rescheduled the 1000 Hotels Tour dates, adding several open-air concerts. Despite the surgery and time taken off, the tour ended on July 13th, 2008 in Werchter, Belgium, and was deemed a success.
Tokio Hotel returned to the recording studio in 2008 and 2009 to record their second English album and third German album. Humanoid, a more techno-oriented launch and a new sound, was the result. Humanoid was published on October 6, 2009, and Tokio Hotel received the "Best Group" award at the EMA in Berlin just shy of a month later on November 5th. Humanoid has released two singles, "Automatic"/"Automatische," which was announced in September 2009, and "World Behind My Wall"/"Let Us Run"), which will be released in January 2010.
