Early life
Geist was born in Champaign, Illinois, on May 10, 1945.
He spent time in Vietnam as a combat photographer with the 1st Infantry Division, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating with a BA in Communications (1968) and the University of Missouri, graduating with an MA in Communications (1971).
Personal life
Geist and his partner Jody, who were married in June 1970, live in New York City and have two children, Willie Geist, a television presenter on NBC and MSNBC, and Libby Geist Wildes, a documentary film editor at ESPN.

Career
Geist began his career in 1972 when he joined the Chicago Tribune's Suburban Trib affiliate, where he served as a reporter and columnist until 1980.
He was a columnist for The New York Times from 1980 to 1987; his column "About New York" column appeared twice a week.
He joined CBS in August 1987 as a reporter, where he contributed to CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes II, and CBS Sports. On CBS Sunday Morning hosted by Charles Kuralt and Charles Osgood, where he gave the Everyman's perspective on American pop culture and current events. On September 16, 2018, he announced his resignation from the program.
