He is best known for his role as John Irvin, a gay police public assistant on ABC's New York City television drama NYPD Blue.
Early life and education
Born William Brochtrup Jr. in Inglewood, California, Brochtrup was raised in Tacoma, Washington, and graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1985.
Personal life
In 1997, Brochtrup was published in People magazine as gay. "C]asting directors have known [that] for years," he said, and that being gay will have no "adverse effect" on his career, even with potential typecasting. Brochtrup said he had not regretted being out back in 2012 when he first came out.
Career
Brochtrup went to Los Angeles after graduating from college to pursue an acting career. In some of his early roles in the 1980s, he was referred to as "William Brochtrup."
