William "Bill" Brochtrup Jr. (born March 7, 1963) is an American actor.

He is best known for his role as John Irvin, a gay police public assistant on ABC's New York City television drama NYPD Blue.

Early life and education

Born William Brochtrup Jr. in Inglewood, California, Brochtrup was raised in Tacoma, Washington, and graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1985.

Personal life

In 1997, Brochtrup was published in People magazine as gay. "C]asting directors have known [that] for years," he said, and that being gay will have no "adverse effect" on his career, even with potential typecasting. Brochtrup said he had not regretted being out back in 2012 when he first came out.

Career

Brochtrup went to Los Angeles after graduating from college to pursue an acting career. In some of his early roles in the 1980s, he was referred to as "William Brochtrup."

David Marshall Grant's Snakebit (off-Broadway at the Century Center and in Los Angeles at the Coast Playhouse), The Black Dahlia Theatre Ensemble (Bach at Leipzig, Small Tragedy), and Pasadena's Theatre Company (If Memory Serves).

He appeared in Life as We Know It, Duck, Ravenous, Man of the Year, and Space Marines.

On three Steven Bochco shows: CBS sitcom Public Morals, ABC's Total Security, and seven seasons on the ABC drama NYPD Blue, Brochtrup has been a series regular. He has appeared on television programs as diverse as Dexter, Without a Trace, the animated children's series The Wild Thornberrys (as Dr. Joe Bowman), Major Crimes (as Dr. Joe Bowman), and Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown. Brochtrup is a regular guest host of PBS' In The Life of Brochtrup.

He has contributed to Out magazine. The best-selling book of essays I Love You, Mom! Un-Cabaret and other spoken word readings are among Un-Cabaret's original stories. During Handshake Tours for the United Service Organizations (USO) and Armed Forces Entertainment, he has hosted AIDS Walks around the region, as well as animal rescue groups such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
