Bernd Leno Career

Club career

Leno's contract was extended until June 2014 after he started progressing through the youth set-up at VfB Stuttgart in May 2011. He was a regular goalkeeper in the VfB Stuttgart II reserve team, who competed in the German Third Division by this time.

He was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen until December 31, 2011. Leno made his Bundesliga debut against Werder Bremen four days after the five-month loan agreement was agreed. He was the third goalkeeper in Bundesliga history to keep a clean sheet in his first three Bundesliga games, after Dirk Krüssenberg and Heribert Macherey. In the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League group stage, he became the youngest German goalkeeper to ever play in a Champions League match, defeating Chelsea aged 19 years and 193 days.

On November 30, 2011, Leno signed a contract that kept him with Bayer until 2017. Leno made his debut in the first team on November 8, 2013 and extended his deal to keep him at the club until 2018. In a 4–1 league victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on April 14, he made his 300th appearance for Leverkusen.

Leno had signed a five-year deal for a fee of £22.5 million, according to Arsenal, who is still waiting for "the completion of regulatory procedures."

In Arsenal's 4–2 victory over Vorskla Poltava in the Europa League, Leno made his debut for the club. In a 2–0 home victory over Watford, Leno made his Premier League debut, replacing regular goalkeeper Petr ech, who sustained an injury in the first half. Unai Emery, the head coach, was praised for his work with the goalkeeping coaches, who said, "He is doing really well with the goalkeepers." I talked with him and said that the most important thing is for the team to be able to support us. He did it on Wednesday and today, as well as against Vorskla, which were uninhibited. We have three very good goalkeepers. Petr etr ech, his appearances for us have been really important, as has his knowledge. Leno can learn by staying close to Petr ech every day. I'm really happy with him. He has waited for his time, and it is finally here.

In the 2019-20 season, Leno was the runner-up of the Arsenal Player of the Season award, receiving 16 percent of the vote. In a 3–2 victory over Benfica in the Europa League round of 32 on February 25, 2021, he played his 100th match for Arsenal in all competitions.

After the signing of Aaron Ramsdale, who was selected as the starting goalkeeper, Leno was relegated to a backup in the 2021-22 season.

Leno took Leno's three-year deal with the option to prolong by a further 12 months for a reported £8 million fee on August 2, 2022.

International career

In October 2015, Leno was given his first call up to the senior German team for UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Georgia. He was later selected in his country's squad for the final tournament in the following summer.

Leno was chosen for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. He was in one game of the tournament against Australia. He was selected in Germany's provisional squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but not for the final 23-man squad. He was named in the UEFA Euro 2020 squad on May 1921.

Julian Nagelsmann slams 'so-called expert' Jens Lehmann after the Germany legend defends Bernd Leno's decision to turn down international call-up

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 11, 2024
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has taken aim at Jens Lehmann for his comments on the country's goalkeeper selection. The four-time World Cup winners face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday night in the Nations League but will do so without No 1 goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, after the Barcelona star sustained a serious knee injury last month. Fulham star Bernd Leno was called up by Nagelsmann for the upcoming internationals but turned down the opportunity after he was informed that he would not get any minutes. Former Germany goalkeeper Lehmann revealed he was 'surprised' that Leno was not considered to start by Nagelsmann.

Bruno Fernandes APOLOGISES to Fantasy Football managers after missing two clear-cut chances in 1-0 win against Fulham, as Man United star makes promise to 'repay' them

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 17, 2024
Bruno Fernandes has issued a hilarious apology to Fantasy Football managers after the Manchester United midfielder missed two clear-cut chances in his side's 1-0 win over Fulham. The Portuguese star should have scored twice in the space of six minutes in the first half as the Red Devils looked to assert their dominance at Old Trafford. Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno gave the ball away to Casemiro in the 29th minute and redeemed himself by saving from United captain Fernandes with his body when he should have done better. Then, soon after, Casemiro played a stunning first time to pass to a free Fernandes again and this time Leno saved with his left leg. All this meant that the tricky attacking midfielder, who has bagged 79 goals and 67 assists in four years at the club, was left ruing his missed chances and Fantasy managers left ruing a disappointing return of just three points.
