Bernd Fasching (born in Vienna, Austria, 18 July 1955) is an Austrian painter and sculptor.
He lives and works in Vienna.
Life and work
Fasching initiated his Westwork (a western inquiry into the occidental tradition) in the more than 800 years old Vienna St. Stephan's Cathedral in 2000. The project included sculptures, paintings, and other related crafts.
The creation of his works of art in the presence of his visitors and audience is a continually occurring, central component of Fasching's work. Fasching spent and worked in numerous galleries around the world, where he could be seen at work and was always open to discussion. He did not leave the place of work during this period. Fasching created 12 paintings inspired by the visitors' conversations during his work sessions. A special soundtrack was created for each of the project's seven stations [Vienna (1987), Cologne (1991), Zurich (1994), and finally Vienna (2006)]] and then Vienna, Czech Republic, which was played in the respective gallery for the entire 288 hours.
The walk-in sculpture by Fasching, Der Hammer des Thors/Thor's Hammer, created in 1990 in the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts' entrance hall, has since emerged before the museum's visitors, enabling them to follow the creation process. Bernd Fasching, a Dominican Republic sculptor, created a new walk-in sculpture between 1996 and 1997. The landing place of Christopher Columbus on the island is used to reflect on the American continent's turbulent, often tragic past. Terra Nova, the name of this walk-in sculpture series, depicts the landing place of the American Continents.
Fasching created the series Tools based on these sculptures, constructing a sculpture of each of the tools needed for sculpting a monument. Fasching and transformed a bronze sculpture from this series into the Diva Award, an Austrian award for outstanding real estate projects, with Bernd Fasching himself as one of the jury members.
