Helmut Lang (born 10 March 1956) is an Austrian artist and former fashion designer who lives and works in New York and on Long Island.
Career
Lang's first Helmut Lang runway collection in Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou, appeared in 1986. His first Helmut men's collection debuted in 1987 and a decade later, his brand moved from Vienna to New York.
Lang reimagined the silhouette of the 1990s and early 2000s by using unusual fabrics such as rubber, feathers, and metallic fabrics. He turned away from the runway show-as-spectacle during the 1980s and was the first to stream his collection online in 1998.
Lang's brand was known for its utilitarian, minimalist look, as well as his prestige range of denim.
Lang sold a 51% stake in his company to the Prada Group in 1999, with Prada handling distribution and manufacturing and Lang controlling design and advertising. Prada's son Prada began manufacturing a line of Helmut Lang accessories, including shoes, belts, and bags, and opened Helmut Lang stores in Hong Kong and Singapore. Prada Group's revenues decreased from $100 million in 1999 to $37 million in 2003. One of the reasons for the brand's revenue loss was the decision to withdraw the authorization of an external company to produce and sell its highly popular range of Helmut Lang Jeans. In 2005, he resigned from fashion and started his own label. Since being based in New York City and on Long Island as a resident artist, he has been based as an educator. Prada sold the Helmut Lang brand to Link Theory Holdings in 2006.
Lang has collaborated with artists Jenny Holzer and Louise Bourgeois. His latest drawings investigate abstract sculptures and physical structures that are outside of the human body's boundaries. Lang held his first solo art show ALLES GLEICH SCHWER at Hannover's Kestner Gesellschaft in 2008 and has since held solo exhibitions throughout the world. Lang has published excerpts from his ongoing art exhibitions Long Island Diaries [8] and The Selective Memory Series [9] in a variety of publications, including BUTT Magazine [10], Fannzine 137 [11], Visionaire, and most recently The Travel Almanac [12].
