Bernard Cornfeld Life

Bernard "Bernie" Cornfeld (17 August 1927-1927 – February 27, 1995) was a well-known businessman and international financier who sold interests in US mutual funds and was charged and cleared of mismanaging the Investors Overseas Service (IOS).

Early life

Bernard Cornfeld was born in Istanbul, Turkey. His father, a Romanian-Jewish actor, was from a Russian-Jewish family; his mother was from a Russian-Jewish family. When Bernard was four years old, they migrated to the United States, but his father died two years later. Cornfield, a youth from Brooklyn, worked in fruit shops and as a delivery boy every day. He had a stammer as well as a natural gift for selling, and when a schoolfriend's father died, the two of them used the US$3,000 insurance money to buy and operate an age and weight guessing stand at the Coney Island fair. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and Brooklyn College.

He started off as a social worker but then moved to selling mutual funds for an investment house. He left New York City for Paris in 1955 and formed his own business, selling mutual funds using his savings of only a few hundred dollars. Investors Overseas Services (IOS) was the company's predecessor. Cornfeld was able to avoid both American and European tax laws by selling the mutual funds mainly to American servicemen in Europe.

Personal life

Cornfeld moved to Beverly Hills, California, where he ingratiated himself to film industry circles following his release from prison. He lived in the Grayhall mansion, built in 1909 and at one time leased by Douglas Fairbanks for a period of time until 1992. Cornfeld had numbered among his friends Elizabeth Taylor, Michelle Phillips, Warren Beatty, Laurence Harvey, Hugh Hefner, Richard Harris, Al Capp, Howard Sackler, John Heyman, and Simon Reuben.

In the 1976 version of A Star Is Born starring Barbra Streisand, the Grayhall mansion doubled as the home of rock star John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson). Cornfeld had an affair with Heidi Fleiss, then 19 years old, at the age of 60.
